🎞 Netflix is finally taking a page from the rest of Hollywood

In Q1 of 2022, it finally happened: Netflix had a bad quarter. It lost over 200,000 subscribers and acknowledged that newer competitors like Disney Plus and HBO Max were effectively putting an end to how the company had been doing business for nearly a decade.

Netflix, with its then near-endless source of cash and no need to please distributors or theaters, could afford to produce more varied content to try and secure people’s subnoscriptions every monthNetflix was supposed to transform Hollywood. Instead, it’s turning to the same practices that made its competitors, only without the lucrative franchises, fandoms, and huge back catalogs those same competitors enjoy.

CEO Ted Sarandos noted in Netflix’s last earnings call that it would focus on “big event films,” and the company has spent the last couple of months ruthlessly wiping out large parts of departments like animation (more expensive to produce with lower returns).

🚙 The first US Super Nintendo World is set to open in ‘early’ 2023

Universal Studios Hollywood and Nintendo are slowly cranking up the volume about the first Super Nintendo World theme park located in the US. Now, they’re narrowing its opening window to “early” 2023 while posting a video trailer of its signature ride Mario Kart.

The augmented reality on rails ride is already a highlight of the experience at Super Nintendo World in Japan, which we visited early last year, offering an interactive experience where riders in four-seat Mario Kart vehicles can steer to collect coins and also throw shells to defeat Team Bowser, which also allows for different outcomes to the ride.

Riders wear plastic Mario hats with HoloLens-like wired visors on the front, which combine with the movement of the ride, projection mapping on the walls, and actual physical set pieces to deliver action that makes it feel like the karts are going faster than they really are.

✈️ Delta's brand new $4 billion Terminal C at New York's LaGuardia Airport

On Saturday, Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines will officially open its brand new Terminal C at LaGuardia, which features a new departures hall, arrivals hall, gates, and security checkpoint. The $4 billion project is a mammoth investment in New York City, and Delta hopes to create a better customer experience and improve the airport's on-time performance.

There are 36 ticket counters for regular Delta passengers and a Sky Priority check-in area for premium customers. Curbside check-in and bag drop are also available. Also featured is a 238-foot screen behind the ticket counters that displays things like flight information, TSA wait times, and Sky Club volume.

The terminal, which, when complete, will feature 37 gates across four concourses. The new Terminal C will eventually consolidate Terminal D into one giant 1.3 million-square-foot facility.

🏆 Harini Logan of San Antonio, Texas, wins Scripps National Spelling Bee in first-ever lightning-round tiebreaker

The 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee ended in a way none of the 93 competitions before it did, a spell-off.  The final two competitors, Vikram Raju and Harini Logan, could not decipher any of their spelling attempts between Round 13 and 18. The bell rang 10 consecutive times. At that point, judges opted to institute the first spell-off – 90 seconds to spell as many words as possible correctly.

Logan – an eighth-grader from Texas – spelled 21 words correctly, compared to Raju's 15, to become the 2022 champion.  She took home the $50,000 cash prize and Scripps Cup trophy on top of awards from Merriam-Webster and Encyclopedia Britannica

🍎 Apple attempts to appease union efforts with scheduling improvements

Apple will make a number of changes to scheduling rules for its retail employees that the company believes will result in more flexible working hours. The changes will include changes to limits on the number of late shifts worked, consecutive days worked and the minimum amount of time that must pass before an employee is eligible to work a new shift.

The company expanded benefits earlier this year, increasing the number of paid sick days and offering paid parental leave. It also set a new floor of $22 per hour for its retail employees last week. Still, Fruit Stand Workers United — the group in the midst of organizing Apple’s Grand Central Store — is pushing for a $30 minimum wage, tuition reimbursement and more options for retirement plans.
