Simone Biles and other women seek $1B-plus from FBI over Larry Nassar

Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and dozens of other women who say they were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar are seeking more than $1 billion from the FBI for failing to stop the sports doctor when the agency first received allegations against him, lawyers said Wednesday. Separately, 13 claims were filed by others in April.

There’s no dispute that FBI agents in 2015 knew that Nassar was accused of assaulting gymnasts, but they failed to act, leaving him free to continue to target young women and girls for more than a year. He pleaded guilty in 2017 and is serving decades in prison.

Michigan State University, which was also accused of missing chances over many years to stop Nassar, agreed to pay $500 million to more than 300 women and girls who were assaulted by him. USA Gymnastics and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee made a $380 million settlement.

🚁 5 Marines killed in aircraft crash in desert

All five Marines on board an Osprey aircraft were killed when it crashed in the California desert near the Arizona border, the Marine Corps said Thursday, a day after the accident.

The MV-22 Osprey went down at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday during training in a remote area in Imperial County near the community of Glamis, about 115 miles (185 kilometers) east of San Diego and about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Yuma, Arizona.

The Osprey, a hybrid airplane and helicopter, flew in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but has been criticized by some as unsafe. It is designed to take off like a helicopter, rotate its propellers to a horizontal position and cruise like an airplane. Prior to Wednesday’s crash, Osprey crashes had caused 46 deaths.

📉 Dow drops more than 600 points as US stocks end sharply lower ahead of highly-anticipated inflation data

All three major stock benchmarks closed sharply lower Thursday
, with the Nasdaq Composite suffering the biggest loss as investors worry about slowing growth and inflation data that will be released Friday.

Casino
stocks and tech stocks were among the market’s biggest decliners on Thursday: Shares of Las Vegas Sands fell over 5%, while tech giants Meta* and Amazon dropped 6% and 4%, respectively.

Stocks continue to get hit by ongoing investor concerns about high inflation leading to a possible recession, with the Federal Reserve on track to raise interest rates by 0.50% at its upcoming policy meeting this month.

⚖️ FBI Arrests Michigan GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Ryan Kelley for Role in Jan 6

Ryan Kelley, 40, was arrested in western Michigan, FBI spokeswoman Mara Schneider said. He appeared at a brief hearing Thursday afternoon in federal court in Grand Rapids, where he was released from custody without posting bail. The government did not ask that Kelley be detained.

His arrest came hours before the House committee investigating the insurrection holds a widely anticipated public hearing, showing never-seen video, audio and an array of evidence highlighting the deadly violence that erupted on Jan. 6, 2021.

He is among more than 800 people who are facing criminal charges in connection with the Jan. 6 riot. More than 300 people have pleaded guilty, largely to misdemeanor offenses punishable by no more than one year in prison. Some who’ve pleaded guilty to misdemeanors have been sentenced to short stints behind bars while others have been sentenced to home confinement or probation.
