💲 Native American youth to be tapped for conservation projects
US Interior Secretary Deb Haaland on Friday rolled out guidelines for a new youth service program meant to create job opportunities for Native Americans while boosting their cultural connections to nature through conservation projects on tribal and public land.
The Indian Youth Service Corps is the latest addition to the Biden administration’s plans for building a 21st century version of the New Deal-era Civilian Conservation Corps. The mission includes everything from clearing brush to reduce wildfire threats and restore forests to preserving historic sites, helping with archaeological research and building trails.
The Interior Department is funneling a combined $3.3 million this year to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the National Park Service and the Bureau of Reclamation to establish the Indian Youth Service Corps.

🏛 Governors forming task force to address mass shootings
The leaders of the National Governors Association said Friday they’re forming a bipartisan working group to come up with recommendations to stop mass shootings following the Texas school massacre.
Reaching consensus could be a tall order given that the nation’s governors have been divided along partisan lines on how to approach issues of gun control and school safety. The US House this week approved a wide-ranging gun control bill that has little chance of passing the Senate.
A recent survey by The Associated Press showed governors divided, with Democrats calling for more restrictions on guns and Republicans focusing instead on beefing up school security.

🗣 March For Our Lives rallies across the US call for gun control
More than 40,000 marched in Washington, DC, on Saturday to push for gun safety laws. Hundreds of other marches were planned across the country in at least 45 states. These marches come in the wake of yet another string of deadly mass shootings and at a time when it remains unclear if Congress will successfully pass legislation that addresses gun violence. The March for Our Lives group was created by survivors of the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Despite politicians from across the spectrum offering their 'prayers and condolences,' they remain divided on how to approach America's issues surrounding gun violence. Some 256 mass shootings have taken place since the beginning of the year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

📉 A fracking boom made the US the world's biggest oil producer. Now its end is pushing gas prices much higher.
The very boom that bolstered the US' energy independence is now making its gas-price problem much, much worse. For much of the past decade, fracking gave the US energy sector a massive tailwind. In the so-called 'shale revolution,' fields in New Mexico, North Dakota, and Texas became the next boomtowns for energy commodities.
The previous decade's fracking boom quickly turned into a sprint, with companies prioritizing all-out growth over profitability. Industry giants told investors in 2019 they were considering shrinking production.
That all came before the pandemic hit, and turning the lights back on hasn't been easy. Supply-chain issues have also held the sector back from boosting production. Unique sand used for fracking is now in short supply, and prices have nearly tripled from where they stood just one year ago.
