⚡️🌎'Earthquake swarm' in South Carolina

Two earthquakes struck South Carolina on Wednesday,
with the most recent strong enough to get thousands of people to reach out to the US Geological Survey. Authorities have not reported any injuries to date.

The first earthquake, with an epicenter 5 km east of Elgin, South Carolina, struck this afternoon at 2:43 p.m. local time at a depth of 2.6 km. USGS said this quake was a magnitude 3.5 event.

The second earthquake struck moments ago at 7:03 p.m. and was the strongest yet. That quake ranked as a magnitude 3.6 event, was registered at a 3.0 km depth, and had an epicenter not far from the earlier quake, roughly 6 km east of Elgin. Dozens of earthquakes within this swarm have struck South Carolina over the last seven months. The earthquakes this week have all been around Elgin, a small incorporated town in Kershaw, roughly 20 miles northeast of Columbia, the state’s capital.

🚫 The mayoral control bill of Guns in NYC expires Thursday

Governor Kathy Hochul, who cruised to victory in the Democratic primary Tuesday night, has yet to sign two bills passed a month ago that would extend Mayor Eric Adams’ control of city schools and shrink public school class sizes, respectively.

“We passed our legislation and — as a matter of courtesy — were waiting for the governor to call it,” said State Sen. John Liu, who chairs the New York City Education Committee, said Wednesday.

“But tomorrow, we’re going to call it. Because it’s certainly not going to be on the legislature that mayoral control expires,”
by the end of day on June 30, he said. Hochul had previously pushed for a four-year extension of mayoral control, tacking on a year to the three that Adams had proposed as a show of goodwill.

🥳Airbnb has permanently banned parties and in-home events it hosts on its platform

The measure was imposed temporarily during the pandemic, but it was very popular with hosts, that is, those who make their homes available. The company says this rule has become "much more than a public health measure" since it was introduced in August 2020. "It has become a critical community policy to support our hosts and their neighbors," the San Francisco-based company said.

However, Airbnb also said it would eliminate the limit of people who can stay in a house, another measure that it imposed during the pandemic, and that the maximum number of occupants per stay should be 16 people. Regarding the ban on parties, the company explained that after applying this rule in 2020, the number of complaints about this aspect was reduced by 44%.

"This new long-term policy has been enacted to encourage and support community safety,
" Airbnb said.

😏🤔🎶Mystery strikes as Canadian radio station plays Rage Against the Machine song nonstop

This morning Rage Against the Machine's 'Killing in the Name' song began to play on a pop and soft rock radio station in Vancouver, Canada. The hours passed, and the song played thousands of times.

Speculation soon began on social networks, with reports later stating the music was playing in protest against parent company Rogers Sports and Media for the layoffs that had been generated in recent weeks. The incident came a day after the co-hosts of the station's morning show posted on Facebook that they had suddenly been fired.

"Our five years on KiSS RADiO have come to an end. KiSS is changing; unfortunately, we were informed that we wouldn't be part of this new chapter. Although this comes with mixed emotions, we want to express one overwhelming feeling: gratitude," wrote ex-hosts Kevin Lim and Sonia Sidhu.

🤔 Former White House strategist Steve Bannon is seeking a delay in his upcoming criminal case due to the public spectacle and popularity of televised House select committee hearings, according to a June 29 filing in a DC court by attorneys David Schoen, Robert Costello and Evan Corcoran.

▪️ The Trump-era strategist’s defense team argued their client would not be afforded a “fair trial” unless the case was scheduled months after the hearings wrapped. The filing called for October 25 to replace the July 18 start date of this year due to the possibility of jurors’ opinions being influenced by the US lawmakers tasked with probing the events that took place on January 6, 2021.

🗯 “Public impact is not limited to the hearings themselves, but to the media coverage that magnified the hearings. In Washington, DC, where trial will take place – and where the acts alleged in the Indictment took place–every major media outlet treated the hearings as a top news story,” wrote Bannon’s attorneys.

🤔 Calls have rung out across the US demanding gun control laws in a bid to curb violent crimes such as the recent series of mass shootings. Data, nevertheless, show that in states with higher percentages of households with at least one gun, crimes are not higher than in states with strict gun laws.

🗯 "Gun ownership is higher in states with fewer restrictions, and homicide rates in these states are lower. People can protect themselves," George Mason University Professor Emerita Joyce Lee Malcolm said, regarding what she's found through her research. Malcolm pointed to a study on burglars from 1986 that found 34% of burglars interviewed reported "to having been scared off, shot at, wounded or captured by an armed victim."

🗣 Rumors have escalated about former World No. 1 Serena Williams' retirement from tennis after she was sent packing out of Wimbledon's opening round by Harmony Tan of France in a three-set thriller on the hallowed turf of Centre Court.

🔥 Serena herself added fuel to the fire after she failed to give a definitive answer about her future.

🗯 "That's a question I can't answer," Williams said in her post-match press conference. "I don't know. Who knows where I will pop up?" "It's definitely better than last year. That's a start," she joked in reference to the leg injury in 2021 that limited her time on court.

🇳🇿 🛑 New Zealand's government has declared that the Proud Boys and The Base, two American far-right groups, to be terrorist organizations.

▪️ The two groups join 18 others, including the Islamic State, that have been given an official terrorist designation, making it illegal in New Zealand to fund, recruit or participate in the groups, and obligating authorities to take action against them.

▪️ The US groups are not known to be active in New Zealand, although the South Pacific nation has become more attuned to threats from the far right after a white supremacist shot and killed 51 Muslim worshippers at two Christchurch mosques in 2019.
