🔫 New York lawmakers to vote on new gun rules following ruling

New York lawmakers plan to vote Thursday on legislation seeking to limit the proliferation of firearms in public after the Supreme Court gutted the state’s century-old handgun licensing law. The state is overhauling its rules for carrying guns after the court decided that ordinary citizens had a right to arm themselves in public for self-defense, something the state limited in the past mostly to people working in law enforcement or security.

New rules being rushed through an emergency session of the Legislature would allow many more gun owners to apply for a license to carry a concealed weapon, but would seek to set new restrictions on where firearms can be carried. Other provisions require background checks for all purchases of ammunition for guns that require a permit, and bar people with a history of dangerous behavior from getting handgun permits.

🖥 Personal info on California gun owners wrongly made public

The California Department of Justice on Wednesday acknowledged the agency wrongly made public the personal information of perhaps hundreds of thousands of gun owners in up to six state-operated databases, a broader exposure than the agency initially disclosed a day earlier.

Names, dates of birth, gender, race, driver’s license numbers, addresses and criminal histories were exposed for people who were granted or denied permits to carry concealed weapons between 2011 and 2021, the department said.

“It is infuriating that people who have been complying with the law have been put at risk by this breach,” said Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea, president of the California State Sheriffs’ Association. Officials are investigating the extent to which personal information was exposed in those databases.

🛣 Buttigieg launches $1B pilot to build racial equity in roads

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Thursday launched a $1 billion first-of-its-kind pilot program aimed at helping reconnect cities and neighborhoods racially segregated or divided by road projects, pledging wide-ranging help to dozens of communities despite the program’s limited dollars.

New projects could include rapid bus transit lines to link disadvantaged neighborhoods to jobs; caps built on top of highways featuring green spaces, bike lanes and pedestrian walkways to allow for safe crossings over the roadways; repurposing former rail lines; and partial removal of highways.

Under the Reconnecting Communities program, cities and states can now apply for the federal aid over five years to rectify harm caused by roadways that were built primarily through lower-income, Black communities after the 1950s creation of the interstate highway system.

📲 FEMA releases largest update to its mobile app in a decade

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is releasing the largest update to its mobile application in a decade, the agency announced today. FEMA is releasing the app at the beginning of a hurricane season that experts predict will be above average and a wildfire season that’s already devastating, for example, in New Mexico.

The app also features a section called “Recover” where users can learn more about federal disaster declarations in their area that indicate federal assistance will be available and how to apply for it.

For accessibility, the app now works with technologies like screen readers and voiceovers, and is scaled for different screen sizes and has a more consistent layout. Gloria Huang, digital engagement and analytics branch chief for FEMA, said improvements for people with disabilities will continue.

💉 Tweaked COVID boosters in US must target newer omicron types

US regulators told COVID-19 vaccine makers Thursday that any booster shots tweaked for the fall will have to add protection against the newest omicron relatives.

Pfizer and Moderna were already brewing and testing boosters updated against the first omicron mutant in anticipation of an October rollout. Pfizer had begun work on another experimental dose to target the newer strains the FDA ultimately settled on. Moderna told FDA advisers that switching to the even newer strains now circulating might delay its booster update another month. Moderna didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday.

The FDA order doesn’t guarantee combo shots would be offered in the fall. Manufacturers still have to provide key data before the agency decides whether to authorize modified boosters - and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention then would have to decide how they’re used.

Singer-songwriter extraordinaire Taylor Swift and her British actor boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, secretly got engaged a few months ago and shared the happy news with only their “inner-inner circle—basically immediate family, and trusted, very old friends.”

Swift, 32, and Alwyn, 31, have kept their relationship largely out of the public eye. In fact, Swift is apparently so eager to keep the engagement under wraps that she only wears her engagement ring at home.

A source familiar with the couple said the pair's relationship intensified during the Covid-19 pandemic as it resulted in them living together throughout the lockdowns.

‼️ Pentagon Reviewing Proposals From Firms to Develop New Weapons to Help Ukraine - Reports

The US Department of Defense is reviewing 1,300 proposals from 800 companies to develop new weapons and commercial capabilities that they may be able to produce in order to help Ukraine amid Russia's special military operation, CNN reported citing a US defense official.

The proposals include air defense, anti-armor, anti-tank, anti-personnel, coastal defense, drones, secure communications, and counter battery, which are all key needs Ukraine has identified, the report said on Thursday. The Pentagon is expected to decide on which proposals to pursue in the coming weeks, the report said. The United States intends to improve the capacity of the US industrial base in order to support Ukraine's needs should the conflict continue for a long time, the report said.

Earlier this year, US defense officials met with major US defense firms to discuss the capability of the US industrial base to support Ukraine's military needs should the conflict continue for a long time. Congress also approved a $40 billion package to provide assistance to Ukraine.

💧 Multiple errors at Red Hill poisoned Pearl Harbor water

On Thursday a Navy investigation revealed that shoddy management and human error caused fuel to leak into Pearl Harbor’s tap water last year, poisoning thousands of people and forcing military families to evacuate their homes for hotels.

The report listed a cascading series of mistakes from May 6, 2021, when operator error caused a pipe to rupture and 21,000 gallons of fuel to spill when fuel was being transferred between tanks. The report said the investigation revealed that poor training and supervision, ineffective leadership and an absence of ownership regarding operational safety also contributed to the incident.

Military medical teams examined some 6,000 people for nausea, headaches, rashes and other symptoms. The military moved about 4,000 mostly military families into hotels for months while they waited for their water to be safe again.

Deadly listeria outbreak spanning 10 states

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted a notice Thursday of a listeria outbreak with 23 reported illnesses across 10 states.

According to the CDC, 20 of the infected people either live in or traveled to Florida within a month of the diagnosis, though the significance of this finding is still under investigation.

Listeria can be treated with antibiotics, but it is especially dangerous to pregnant women, newborns, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Listeria is one of the most dangerous forms of food poisoning, and 22 of the infected people were hospitalized. One person from Illinois died and one pregnant woman lost her fetus, the CDC said.
