UK MP Christopher Pincher, who resigned over groping allegations, has been suspended by the Conservative Party.

The party said he had the whip removed after he was reported to Parliament's behavior watchdog.
Pincher resigned on Thursday, admitting to having "drank far too much" amid reports that he groped two men in a London club.

"I’ve embarrassed myself and other people which is the last thing I want to do and for that I apologize to you and to those concerned," Pincher wrote in his resignation letter to PM Boris Johnson.

Former Housing Minister Kelly Tolhurst has been appointed as his replacement.

🗳 Biden backs filibuster exception to protect abortion access

President Joe Biden said Thursday that he would support an exception to the Senate filibuster to protect abortion access, a shift that comes as Democrats coalesce around an election-year message intended to rally voters who are outraged or deflated by the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

Although Democrats already control the Senate by the narrowest of margins, there isn’t enough support within their caucus to change the filibuster rule, which allows any member to block legislation unless it receives 60 votes. But Biden’s statement was the latest indication that, if the party picks up a few more seats in the midterm elections in November, Democrats could seize the opportunity to pass legislation creating a nationwide right to abortion.

🌐 Sprint’s network has been officially retired

The remnants of Sprint’s network have been put out to pasture. As of yesterday, Sprint’s LTE network has been retired by its new owner, T-Mobile. In April 2020, T-Mobile officially took ownership of the company, including all of its spectrum and network towers, which would ultimately be repurposed for 5G. Sprint’s 3G CDMA network was the first to go when T-Mobile started to shut down Sprint’s systems in March.

Sprint was late to LTE after betting first on WiMAX, and as a consequence, its LTE network lagged far behind the competition by the time it was up and running. T-Mobile spokesperson Justin Paulsen confirmed to that the network shutdowns are now underway.

🏥 California first to cover health care for all immigrants

California became the first state to guarantee free health care for all low-income immigrants living in the country illegally, a move that will provide coverage for an additional 764,000 people at an eventual cost of about $2.7 billion a year.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a $307.9 billion operating budget that pledges to make all low-income adults eligible for the state’s Medicaid program by 2024 regardless of their immigration status. Nationwide, federal and state governments join together to give free health care to low-income adults and children through Medicaid. But the federal government won’t pay for people who are living in the country illegally.

About 92% of of Californians currently have some form of health insurance, putting the state in the middle of the pack nationally.

‼️ Trump Media Company Subpoenaed in Federal Criminal Probe Tied to Merger Deal - Filing

A federal court subpoenaed former US President Donald Trump's media group in connection to a criminal investigation linked to its merger deal with Digital World Acquisition Corp., according to a filing in the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

"Digital World has been informed that on June 27, 2022 TMTG [Trump Media and Technology Group] received a subpoena from the SEC seeking documents relating to, among other things, Digital World and other potential counterparties for a business transaction involving TMTG," Digital World said in a filing on Friday.

In addition, Digital World said it has also been informed that "on June 30, 2022, TMTG was served with a subpoena, issued by a federal grand jury sitting in the Southern District of New York, seeking a subset of the same or similar documents demanded in subpoenas to Digital World and its directors. Certain current and former TMTG personnel have also recently received individual grand jury subpoenas."

Digital World said in the filing that the SEC is seeking various documents and information related to the company's merger with the Trump's media group, information about potential targets other than TMTG, and information about relations Digital World has with other entities.

The investigations by the SEC and the Justice Department could delay or prevent the merger, the filing said.

🚇 Lawsuits filed days after deadly Missouri Amtrak crash

The first lawsuits have been filed only days after an Amtrak train collision and derailment in rural Missouri that left four people dead and injured up to 150 others. That lawsuit blames MS Contracting, of Brookfield, Missouri, for the crash, saying the train was “clearly visible” and that the truck driver was careless in crossing the tracks.

The crossing where the collision occurred has no lights, signals or gates to warn of an approaching train. Chariton County leaders have been pushing for a safety upgrade at the railroad crossing for nearly three years, presiding county commissioner Evan Emmerich said this week. The National Transportation Safety Board said the train was going about 87 mph (140 kph), when the collision happened.

PayPal is ending fee-free Friends & Family payments for business accounts

Starting July 28th, only personal PayPal accounts will be able to get funds via Friends & Family, a transaction method intended for trusted recipients. PayPal is putting new limits on a feature in its payment system that allows people to receive money without paying extra fees, the company recently announced.

Many businesses handle transactions using a PayPal business account and take payments for goods and services through F&F, even though you’re technically not supposed to. The buyer might not realize the difference or care, or the business and the customer could agree to send cash that way to avoid seller fees.

In the same announcement, PayPal also said the transaction fee would change beginning later this month. Currently, sellers pay 2.89 percent plus $0.49 per transaction, but starting July 28th, that will change to 2.99 percent without an additional flat fee.

🚙 Elon Musk’s ‘Teslas in Tunnels’ Las Vegas project is still happening

The first passenger station in the “Vegas Loop” network of vehicle tunnels that’s being built by Elon Musk’s Boring Company was revealed. The station is situated underneath Resorts World Las Vegas, the first in what is expected to be 55 stops along 29 miles of tunnels.

The Boring Company already operates a small version of this tunnels system underneath the Las Vegas Convention Center, which opened in early 2021 and involves two 0.8-mile tunnels. Clark County has claimed that as many as 57,000 passengers will be able to travel through the tunnel system per hour and that no taxpayer money will be spent to build it.

The Boring Company previously said that it would foot the bill for building the main tunnels but planned to ask hotel casinos or other businesses that want a station to pay for those construction costs.

🚛 Migrants who died cleared inland checkpoint

The tractor-trailer at the center of a human-smuggling attempt that left 53 people dead had passed through an inland US Border Patrol checkpoint with migrants inside the sweltering rig earlier in its journey, a US official said.

Texas state police also announced they would operate their own inland checkpoints for tractor-trailers on the orders of Gov. Greg Abbott, who considers the Biden administration’s efforts insufficient. It was unclear how many trucks they would be stopping.

It remained unclear just how long the migrants were inside the trailer on the sweltering day, and whether having their cell phones confiscated by the smugglers before being placed inside contributed to the extremely high death toll.
