🚫Russia's President Vladimir Putin will not congratulate his US counterpart Joe Biden and Americans on Independence Day this year, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

Peskov explained that the reason is "the fact that this year was the culmination of an unfriendly policy towards our country on the part of the United States."

"Therefore, of course, in these conditions it can hardly be considered appropriate to send such a congratulatory message," he added.

🌭An eco-activist stopped a hot dog-eating record holder from repeating his feat at a competition in New York. Joey "Jaws" Chestnut set a world record last year by swallowing 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes. This time he only managed to eat 63.

At least 13 hot dogs were rescued, now animal rights activists can be proud.

Highland Park July 4 parade shooting update from the police: Shooter is on the loose; Residents are asked to shelter in place; 6 people are confirmed dead; 24 people are injured
‼️ At least six people died and 24 were wounded in a shooting at a July Fourth parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, and officers are searching for a suspect who likely fired on the festivities from a rooftop, police said Monday. Highland Park Police Commander Chris O’Neill, the incident commander on scene, urged people to shelter in place as authorities search for the suspect.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli said at a news conference that the gunman apparently opened fire on parade-goers from a rooftop using a rifle that was recovered at the scene. He didn’t know which building. Covelli said police believe there was only one shooter and warned that he should still be considered armed and dangerous. He and O’Neill described the shooting as random.

🚨 An unarmed Black man was chased on foot by Akron police and killed him in a hail of gunfire. Officers claimed he had shot at them earlier from a vehicle and feared he was preparing to fire again, authorities said Sunday at a news conference.

Akron police released video of the shooting of Jayland Walker, 25, who was killed June 27 in a pursuit that had started with an attempted traffic stop. The mayor called the shooting “heartbreaking” while asking for patience from the community.

It’s not clear how many shots were fired by the eight officers involved, but Walker sustained more than 60 wounds. An attorney for Walker’s family said officers kept firing even after he was on the ground. Walker was grieving the recent death of his fiancee, but his family had no indication of concern beyond that, and he wasn’t a criminal.

🛵 Amazon has launched its first “micromobility hub” in the UK with the aim to swap “thousands” of polluting delivery trucks with electric cargo bikes — and, in some cases, walking. The project is intended to help Amazon achieve its climate goals to have 50 percent of its deliveries be carbon neutral by 2030.

Starting in the London borough of Hackney, the company says that it will deliver 1 million packages a year using walking and electric cargo bikes, in addition to deliveries that are made with electric vans. Delivery workers on foot and e-bikes will help displace “thousands” of traditional van trips, Amazon said.

The company already operates 1,000 electric delivery vans in the UK, and has plans to introduce a new Rivian-made lineup of vans in the US later this year.

A sprawling, privately run detention center in the wind-swept California desert town of Adelanto can house nearly 2,000 migrants facing the prospect of deportation, but these days it’s nearly empty.

The Adelanto facility is an example of how the US government’s policy of guaranteed minimum payments in contracts with private companies to house immigrant detainees may have a potential financial downside. The government commits to pay for a certain number of beds, whether they’re used or not. US tax payers are paying for at least 1,455 beds a day at Adelanto, but this fiscal year the average daily population is 49 detainees.

The US government pays to guarantee 30,000 immigration detention beds are available in four dozen facilities across the country, but so far this fiscal year about half, on average, have been occupied, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement data. The average cost of a detention bed was $144 each day during the last fiscal year, the documents show.
