🔥 Yosemite fire grows as crews protect iconic sequoias Campers and residents near the blaze were evacuated but the rest of the sprawling park in California remained open, though heavy smoke obscured scenic vistas and created unhealthy air quality. “Today it’s actually the smokiest that we’ve seen,” Nancy Phillipe, a Yosemite fire information spokesperson, said Sunday. “Up until this morning, the park has not been in that unhealthy category, but that is where we are now.” A sprinkler system set up within the grove kept the tree trunks moist and officials were hopeful that the steady spray of water along with previous prescribed burns would be enough to keep flames at bay, Phillipe said. So far in 2022, over 35,000 wildfires have burned nearly 4.7 million acres in the US, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

💼 Dire US labor shortage provides opportunity for ex-prisoners

Reentry programs are one way employers are trying to fill some of the 11.3 million open jobs in the US amid a dire national labor shortage. The practice of employing people with a criminal record is known as “second-chance hiring."

In rosier economic times, many former prisoners faced steep obstacles to finding work. The labor shortage sparked by the COVID-19 pandemic now presents them with opportunities, said Eric Beamon, a recruiter for MagCor, a company that provides job training to people in Mississippi correctional facilities.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, barriers faced by people with felony convictions were linked to a loss of at least 1.7 million employees from the workforce and a cost of at least $78 billion to the economy.

🌃 New York law requires gun permit applicants to submit social media accounts for review

As of September 1st, New York residents who want to carry concealed handguns will need to submit their social media accounts as part of their permit application. They'll need to provide details of active and inactive accounts from the previous three years, along with at least four references.

Local sheriffs' staff, judges and country clerks will be tasked with looking at social media accounts for warning signs.

The measure was included in legislation that Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law last week. Peter Kehoe, the executive director of the New York Sheriffs’ Association, argued that the law infringes rights under the Second Amendment and suggested local officials may not actually review an applicant's social media accounts. Others have expressed concern about the law in relation to surveillance of people of color.

‼️At Least 50,000-70,000 Ukrainian Troops Killed Since Start of Russia's Operation - Hackers

The casualties among the Ukrainian armed forces since the start of Russia’s special military operation currently stand at least between 50,000 and 70,000, a member of the RaHDIt Russian hacker group told Sputnik. "The losses of the Ukrainian army are really very high, much higher than what the office of the president officially declares… They are greatly underestimated, there are clearly not 10, but at least 50-70 thousand losses," the hacker said on condition of anonymity.

Oleksiy Arestovich, an adviser to the head of Ukraine's presidential office, said at the start of June that up to 10,000 Ukrainian troops have been killed since the start of Russia’s special operation.

UN Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo said at the end of last month that a total of 4,731 civilians have been killed during the conflict in Ukraine and 5,900 others have been injured.

📈 Elon Musk says he’ll increase childcare benefits at his companies ‘significantly’

Elon Musk says he’s going to boost childcare benefits at his companies as part of his mission to tackle the “underpopulation crisis” that he adamantly claims is “the biggest danger civilization faces by far.”

Musk adds that the Musk Foundation will “donate directly to families” as well, but it’s unclear what exactly this means. Musk says he’ll share more details about these plans next month. Tesla currently provides up to 16 weeks of paid family leave, as well as covers up to $40,000 for fertility services. Job listings for Neuralink indicate that it offers parental leave, but it’s unclear what kind of family-related benefits SpaceX and The Boring Company have to offer.

Musk has brought up a collapsing birth rate several times in the recent past, and rehashed the topic once again after a report from revealed that Musk had twins with one of his top Neuralink executives, Shivon Zilis, last year.

🥵 UK hotter than Hawaii

Temperatures on Sunday soared to just below 30 degrees Celsius. Ireland also recorded its warmest day of 2022 to date as 25.6 degrees Celsius was recorded at Shannon Airport in County Clare.

The hot weather is expected to continue into next week, with UK temperatures set to soar above 32 degrees Celsius on Monday and further on Tuesday, potentially making it the warmest day of the year so far. Parts of the country were warmer than areas along the US coast, such as Los Angeles and parts of Hawaii's Maui.

The Met Office with UK Health Security Agency has issued a level-3 heat health watch alert
through next week across southeast England.

😐 Emmanuel Macron went to extraordinary lengths to support Uber’s lobbying campaign to help it disrupt France’s closed-shop taxi industry, even telling the tech company he had brokered a secret “deal” with its opponents in the French cabinet.

▪️ Leaked files including text message exchanges between Uber executives and Macron reveal how the cab-hailing business identified him as a key ally when he was economy minister and turned to him to help it behind the scenes.

▪️ The files suggest pro-business Macron, who was re-elected French president in April, was close enough to Uber’s managers during his two years in the economy ministry from 2014-16 for them not to think twice about contacting him for possible help when their premises were raided by tax and other authorities.

🤔 The American defense firm L3Harris has backed away from talks with the blacklisted Israeli spyware company NSO Group to buy the firm’s hacking tools, following intelligence and security concerns raised by the Biden administration, according to people familiar with the matter.

▪️ Shortly after news reports were released last month about the administration's concerns regarding the talks, L3Harris told the US government it was no longer pursuing the acquisition of NSO’s spyware capabilities, a US official said.

▪️ A few days after the reports were published, “L3 reached out to the US government and said they would not be moving forward,” the official said. Like others familiar with the matter, he spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the issue’s sensitivity. The New York Times was first to report that L3Harris had notified the administration that the talks were off.
