📈 Annual inflation in the United States grew to 9.1%, the highest in 40 years

US inflation surged to a new four-decade high in June because of rising prices for gas, food and rent, squeezing household budgets and pressuring the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates aggressively - trends that raise the risk of a recession.

The government’s consumer price index soared 9.1% over the past year, the biggest yearly increase since 1981, with nearly half of the increase due to higher energy costs.

Many economists worry that the Fed’s drive to quell inflation will cause it to tighten credit too aggressively even while the economy, by some measures, is slowing. Much higher borrowing costs could trigger a recession, potentially by next year.

🎞 Netflix is partnering with Microsoft for its new ad-supported tier

Netflix is partnering with Microsoft for its upcoming ad-supported streaming tier, the company announced Wednesday. The streaming service says Microsoft will become its “global advertising technology and sales partner” upon rolling out the cheaper option.

“It’s very early days and we have much to work through,” Netflix COO Greg Peters writes in the post. “But our long term goal is clear. More choice for consumers and a premium, better-than-linear TV brand experience for advertisers. We’re excited to work with Microsoft as we bring this new service to life.”

Netflix first hinted at a cheaper, ad-supported tier in May and later confirmed the possibility last month. Although Netflix hasn’t announced an official date for the tier’s rollout, it’s rumored to become available to customers by the end of 2022.

💉 US regulators OK new COVID-19 shot option from Novavax

The US is getting another COVID-19 vaccine choice as the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday cleared Novavax shots for adults.
Novavax makes a more traditional type of shot than the three other COVID-19 vaccines available for use in the US -- and one that’s already available in Europe and multiple other countries.

The Maryland company also hopes its shots can become a top booster choice in the US and beyond. Tens of millions of Americans still need boosters that experts call critical for the best possible protection as the coronavirus continues to mutate. For now, the FDA authorized Novavax’s initial two-dose series for people 18 and older.

Much of the company’s vaccine, including doses for the US, are being produced by the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer.

Conservative leadership election: Mordaunt, Truss and Sunak emerge as frontrunners in first ballot

Jeremy Hunt and Nadhim Zahawi are knocked out in the first ballot of Tory MPs, with six candidates left in the race to succeed Boris Johnson. Mr Hunt, who came second in the 2019 leadership election, attracted just 18 votes while Mr Zahawi was eliminated with 25.

Mr Hunt said after he was eliminated: “It’s become obvious to me you only get one big shot at this, and I had mine in 2019.” He warned that “smears and attacks may bring short-term tactical gain but always backfire long-term”, advising the remaining candidates to avoid “drama”. He says that is backing Rishi Sunak for two reasons - citing his 'formidable ability' when it comes to economic policy, and his 'decent, straight' character with 'the highest standards of integrity'

The winner will be announced on 5 September and will replace Mr Johnson as prime minister the next day.

🏛 Democrats in US Senate Introduce Bill Protecting Interstate Travel for Abortion

The legislation, dubbed Freedom to Travel for Health Care Act of, would also protect the ability of entities such as nonprofit organizations to assist individuals in traveling to US states where abortion is permitted, according to the bill text.

The bill was introduced by US Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and co-sponsored by Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar and Richard Blumenthal, among others.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said last week that the House of Representatives will work to pass similar legislation reaffirming the right to travel between US states for the purpose of receiving an abortion, as well as codifying federal protections for abortions after the US Supreme Court overturned its Roe v. Wade decision and allowed states to decide whether to administer or regulate the procedure.

💽 CIA engineer is convicted in a massive theft of secrets released by WikiLeaks

A former CIA software engineer was convicted on Wednesday of federal charges accusing him of causing the biggest theft of classified information in CIA history. Joshua Schulte, who chose to defend himself at a New York City retrial, had told jurors in closing arguments that the CIA and FBI made him a scapegoat for an embarrassing public release of a trove of CIA secrets by WikiLeaks in 2017. Schulte watched without visibly reacting as US District Judge Jesse M. Furman announced the guilty verdict on nine counts, which was reached in mid-afternoon by a jury that has deliberated since Friday.
