The growth rate of China's population has slowed significantly, according to state media citing a senior health official. Recent data showed that the number of new births in 2021 was the lowest in decades across several provinces.

Despite Beijing abandoning its one-child policy in 2016 and introducing a three-child policy, Chinese women remain reluctant to have children because of factors including the rising cost of living, work pressure and fewer women of child-bearing age than might be expected.

🔎According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Ghislaine Maxwell is serving her 20-year sentence at Federal Correctional Institution Tallahassee. The FCI Tallahassee is a low-security federal correctional facility where inmates enjoy movies, a running track, and even yoga in the yard.

The disgraced socialite, who complained to the UN about human rights abuses during her two years in custody in Brooklyn, was expected to serve her time in the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Danbury, Connecticut — the prison that inspired “Orange Is the New Black.”

Maxwell, convicted last December in Manhattan and sentenced in June, repeatedly complained about her treatment at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, her home since her July 2020 arrest.

🥺🥴A chess robot broke the finger of a seven-year-old boy playing in a tournament in Russia, according to reports from local news outlets.

The incident was captured on video last week at the Moscow Chess Open, where the robot was hired to play competitors. The machine is a standard industrial robot arm customized to move pieces on three chess boards simultaneously.

“The robot was rented by us. It has been exhibited in many places, for a long time, by specialists. The operators overlooked it. The child made a move, and after that we needed to give time for the robot to answer, but the boy hurried, the robot grabbed him. We have nothing to do with the robot” said Sergey Lazarev, President of the Moscow Chess Federation, told Russian news agency TASS

🌲🌳🌵The Biden administration said the government would plant more than one billion trees across millions of acres of burned and dead woodlands in the U.S. West, as officials struggle to counter the increasing toll on the nation’s forests from wildfires, insects, and other manifestations of climate change.

Destructive fires in recent years that burned too hot for forests to regrow naturally have far outpaced the government’s capacity to plant new trees. That has created a backlog of 4.1 million acres (1.7 million hectares) in need of replanting, officials said.

The U.S. Agriculture Department said it would have to quadruple the number of tree seedlings produced by nurseries to get through the backlog and meet future needs.

🚓🚨A violent weekend in Atlanta leaves at least 15 people shot, police report. A Sunday morning drive-by shooting at a Shell gas station near the Diamond Club off Northside Drive that left eight people shot was just one of several incidents police responded to from Saturday to Sunday.

Through Saturday night and early morning, police recorded three shooting cases with almost five (5) injured and one (1) 17-year-old-boy killed.

On Sunday, around 8:55 p.m., an adult man was shot at 300 Wilson Mill Road in southwest Atlanta. Investigators are working on learning more about what led to this violent weekend.

🦠A child visiting Washington, D.C. has been diagnosed with monkeypox, Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed during a news conference Monday.

It’s one of two pediatric cases in the country. Health officials said last week that one case involved a toddler in California, and the other case involved an infant who is not a U.S. resident but who tested positive while in D.C. Bowser said that health workers have carefully tracked the child’s contacts and that she doesn’t believe the child was hospitalized.

The confirmation came about a week after health officials said D.C. is experiencing the largest monkeypox outbreak per capita in the nation. There have been 110 confirmed cases of monkeypox in D.C., 71 in Maryland, and 40 in Virginia, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

"Climate change has everything to do with the extreme weather that we see at the moment, and it's human-induced climate change. It's not a natural variation," Kirsty McCabe, a meteorologist at the U.K.'s Royal Meteorological Society, told CBS News.

This week the U.K. saw a record 40 degrees Celsius, or about 104 Fahrenheit – 30 degrees hotter than typical summer temperatures in a country where less than 5% of homes were estimated to have air conditioning. The heat waves in China earlier this month – specifically in the Zhejiang province, east of Shanghai – saw temperatures exceeding 42 degrees Celsius (up to 107 degrees Fahrenheit).

The extreme heat has contributed to wildfires in the U.K. and across Europe – including France, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Portugal.

Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law who formerly served as a senior presidential adviser, has revealed in an excerpt from his upcoming memoir "Breaking History: A White House Memoir" that he was diagnosed and treated for thyroid cancer while working for his wife's father.

After being diagnosed, Kushner asked White House physician Sean Conley not to tell anyone, especially his wife Ivanka Trump.

The cancer was diagnosed early, but necessitated the removal of a "substantial part" of the thyroid, Kushner notes.
