Last Sunday, French scientist Etienne Klein posted a tweet claiming to contain the latest astonishing picture taken by the James Webb Space Telescope of Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the sun.

💬 “This level of detail… A new world is revealed every day,” the joke tweet reads.

👀 While most Twitter users recognized the sausage in the picture, others were more gullible, which started a backlash - with users accusing Klein of spreading misinformation.

Later, Klein acknowledged that the joke went out of hand and wrote his apology on Wednesday: “Given some of the comments, I feel compelled to clarify that this tweet containing an alleged snapshot of Proxima Centauri was entertainment.”

👊 Ro Malabanan, a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, reportedly stopped an attacker after witnessing him hit another man in an unprovoked attack in New York City.

The MMA expert was heading to work when he saw a homeless man, later identified as 28-year-old Samuel Frazier, sucker-punch a construction worker in SoHo and reportedly assaulted six men along Broadway.

The New York Police Department eventually arrested the attacker, who has been charged with two counts of assault.

🦠 The Biden administration on Thursday declared monkeypox a public health emergency, with cases on the rise across the US. The administration has been criticized at times for its handling of the outbreak, and some have called on the government to declare a national emergency without delay.

Since the first US monkeypox case was identified in mid-May, more than 6,600 probable or confirmed cases have been detected in the United States. Cases have been identified in every state except Montana and Wyoming.

President Joe Biden named Robert Fenton as the White House's national monkeypox response coordinator. The CDC has said since June it has made a concerted effort to do extensive education and outreach to the LGBTQ community.

🎞 HBO Max will be replaced next year by a new service combined with Discovery Plus. Early in the week, the company made the decision to remove the nearly complete Batgirl from the release calendar and shuttle it off to the vault. Additional films exclusive to HBO Max disappeared from the service—but are still available to buy or rent.

“HBO Max has a competitive feature set, but it has had performance and customer issues,” Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav said on an earnings call today. He went on to claim Discovery Plus has a better tech stack and would become the core of the new service which will combine the content of HBO Max.

It’s not clear what Warner Brothers Discovery will call the new combined service, but it’s certain we will be hearing more in the year to come.

🚨 The federal government filed civil rights charges Thursday against four Louisville police officers over the drug raid that led to the death of Breonna Taylor, a Black woman whose fatal shooting helped fuel the racial justice protests that rocked the nation in 2020.

The charges are another effort to hold law enforcement accountable for the killing of the 26-year-old medical worker after one of the officers was acquitted of state charges earlier this year.

The Justice Department is also conducting a non-criminal investigation of the Louisville Police Department, announced last year, that is probing whether the department has a pattern of using excessive force and conducting unreasonable search and seizures.

⚖️ Oscar Award-winning actor, Kevin Spacey has been ordered to pay nearly $31 million in damages over alleged sexual misconduct behind the scenes of Netflix’s hit political drama, House of Cards. The payment from Spacey will go to the show’s producer, MRC.

An arbitrator in November 2021, after going through 8 days of live testimony and 20 hours of videotaped deposition testimony, ruled in favor of MRC, awarding the company $29.5 million in damages. That award has been upheld by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mel Red Recana with the judge ruling that it was not even close. The award to MRC will also include an extra $1.4 million in attorney fees and costs.

🚙 Volkswagen announced that the 2023 ID.4 electric crossover SUV, which the automaker just started producing at its factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, will start at the suggested price of $37,495 — making it one of the more affordable crossovers on the market.

Combined with the federal EV tax credit of $7,500 — which may be renewed under the Senate Democrat’s new reconciliation package that’s currently under debate — the ID.4’s price could come down even more.

Originally, the automaker had said it wanted its US-made ID.4s to start at $35,000 — or $27,500 with the federal tax credit. When it was first announced in 2020, VW made a point of emphasizing that the ID.4 was priced to be a high-volume, mass-market vehicle — a car for “the millions, not the millionaires.”

Lady Gaga confirmed her casting in “Joker 2” by posting a musical teaser to social media. Todd Phillips, who directed and co-wrote the 2019 film first teased "Joker: Folie à Deux" back in June, will star Gaga opposite Joaquin Phoenix, returning to the role of Joker after winning the Oscar for best actor thanks to his performance in the 2019 first installment.

Phillips’ original “Joker” became a box office phenomenon in 2019, grossing just over $1 billion worldwide to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. Gaga was circling the role of Harley Quinn in the upcoming “Joker” sequel, which is set to be a musical. Warner Bros. will release “Joker: Folie à Deux” in theaters Oct. 4, 2024.
