⚖️ Trump says he took the Fifth in NY civil investigation

Legal experts said answering questions in a deposition was risky because anything he said could potentially be used against him in a parallel criminal investigation by the Manhattan district attorney. The Fifth Amendment protects people from being compelled to be witnesses against themselves in a criminal case.

New York’s investigation involves allegations that Trump’s company, the Trump Organization, misled lenders and tax authorities about the value of prized assets like golf courses and skyscrapers.

The district attorney’s investigation has already led to criminal charges against the Trump Organization and its longtime finance chief, Allen Weisselberg, accused of tax fraud related to fringe benefits offered by the company.

🖋 Biden signs ‘burn pits’ help for vets

President Joe Biden, whose elder son Beau died of cancer years after deploying to Iraq, signed legislation on Wednesday expanding federal health care services for millions of veterans who served at military bases where toxic smoke billowed from huge “burn pits.”

The law, which Biden described as long overdue, caps a years-long battle to ensure treatment for chronic illnesses that veterans have blamed on burn pits, which were used to dispose of chemicals, tires, plastics, medical equipment and human waste on military bases. Estimates of affected troops run to 3.5 million.

The president made addressing the problem one of his priorities during his State of the Union address in March.

🎫 Spotify tests selling concert tickets straight to fans

The site, dubbed Spotify Tickets, currently has a limited selection of upcoming US-based concerts for participating artists like Limbeck, Tokimonsta, and Annie DiRusso.

Spotify already partners with Ticketmaster, Eventbrite, and See Tickets to sell tickets through its new Live Events Feed, where you can browse nearby shows and purchase tickets through a third party. The new Spotify Tickets site, however, lets you buy tickets through Spotify itself.

TikTok is making similar moves to help artists promote live events. Earlier this month, the service announced a partnership with Ticketmaster that lets users buy tickets to see Demi Lovato, OneRepublic, Usher, and the WWE from within the app.

🎞 Disney Plus’ ad-supported plan will launch in December

Disney’s ad-supported tier of Disney Plus will cost $7.99 per month — the current cost of the ad-free plan — and will be available beginning December 8th, the company announced on Wednesday. That same day, there will be a price hike for the ad-free plan, which will cost $10.99 per month. The cost of that annual subnoscription will be jumping from $79.99 to $109.99.

The ad-supported plan doesn’t come as a surprise; Disney had said earlier this year that the plan would be arriving in late 2022. Netflix is also planning to launch its own ad-supported tier, though the company isn’t expecting to launch it until early 2023.

🗳 Third Times’ Not a Charm

Joe Arpaio, who once served as Arizona’s longtime sheriff, saw his third comeback bid go up in flames late Wednesday after losing the race for the mayor of Fountain Hills.

The 90-year-old figure lost out against two-term incumbent Ginny Dickey to lead the Maricopa County town. Incidentally, Fountain Hills was also the town he lost the vote in his first two comeback initiatives.

Once a prominent figure in Republican politics in the Copper State, Arpaio was involved in a firestorm after it was determined he’d ordered large-scale traffic patrols that targeted immigrant populations. However, despite a conviction he was later pardoned by former US President Donald Trump in December 2020.

📈 Miami's Republican mayor lays groundwork for possible presidential run

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and his political team are now looking to take their brand national — and, specifically, to states crucial for any presidential aspirant. He currently serves as president of the United States Conference of Mayors, which represents over 1,400 cities with populations of 30,000 or more.

Suarez, the son of Miami's first Cuban-born mayor, has received national attention as the GOP looks to build on recent gains among Latino voters and recapture urban support. He is considered a rising political star who's overseen the ascendance of one of America's fastest-growing and most dynamic cities.

🏛 Trump took Fifth Amendment more than 440 times

Former President Donald Trump invoked his Fifth Amendment right more than 440 times Wednesday in refusing to answer questions at a deposition by lawyers for New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Trump answered just one question — his name — and then cited the Fifth on every other question he was asked during the deposition, his lawyer Ronald Fischetti says.

Also the former President read aloud a statement in which he called James’ probe “the greatest witch hunt in the history of our country,” and accused the Democratic attorney general of “openly campaigning on a policy of destroying me,” Fischetti said.
