🇷🇺 A UK research institute has apologized to a Russian scientist who was told that her application to study was rejected because of her nationality. She has now been offered a place.

The Beatson Institute reportedly sent a rejection message to the applicant, saying that "very recently the Beatson has established a new policy upon which I am unable to appoint you because you are Russian... really hope that you can find a place to do your PhD!”

Commenting on the criticism that the rejection caused, Director Owen Sansom said in a statement: “Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis and offers are always reviewed against external checks, such as visa requirements or UK government sanctions. In this case, there was an initial misunderstanding of these restrictions, which has been addressed.”

🇬🇧 What's behind the medicine shortage in the UK?

Dr. Bharat Pankhania, a senior clinical lecturer at The University of Exeter's Medical School, told Sputnik that the recent shortage of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and some other drugs was because of the UK leaving the European Union.

"Trade between the European Union and the United Kingdom is affected and it is affecting supplies of essential radioisotopes as well as antibiotics and cancer treatments, as well as other medicines," Pankhania said, "This is a consequence of Brexit."

The senior medic blamed the government for refusing to address the big issue, which is UK trade with EU, and warned that the lack of HRT could affect patients "across the board" in the National Health Service.

🔻However, the Daily Express offered a different explanation, reporting that the lack of HRT since April this year is caused by a shortage of material imported from the Far East.

⛽️ Gas prices dip just below $4 for the first time in 5 months

AAA said the national average for a gallon of regular gas was $3.99 on Thursday, down from the mid-June record of $5.02. However, that’s still about 80 cents higher than the average a year ago.

The average gas price has dropped 58 straight days, but that streak will end soon, predicts Tom Kloza, head of energy analysis at the Oil Price Information Service. He said the industry will face challenges to meet gasoline demand for the rest of the year.

Biden has also ordered the release of oil from the nation’s strategic petroleum reserve this year. While not large enough to account for the drop in gasoline prices, the extra supply from reserves might have helped stem the rise in pump prices, according to analysts.

🤝 Austin pledges military training, support for Baltics

The US will conduct more military exercises with Baltic nations such as Latvia, and look to provide increased training, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said.

Speaking at a news conference with Latvia’s Defense Minister Artis Pabriks, Austin said plans to do continuous rotations of forces into the Baltics will likely use troops from US brigades in Romania and other parts of Europe, but “we can also bring in forces from the United States.”

Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia - all former Soviet republics - gained independence with the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, and joined NATO in 2004, putting themselves under the military protection of the US and its Western allies.

Rivian, the buzzy electric vehicle company backed by Ford and Amazon, reported a net loss of $1.71 billion in the second quarter of 2022 based on $364 million in revenue.

Last month, Rivian laid off around 6 percent of its 14,000 employees, or around 800 people, citing a need to cut costs in order to speed up development of future versions of its electric trucks and SUVs.

🔋Acura’s first electric SUV will have one of the brightest EV grilles yet

Acura teased its first electric vehicle Thursday, and the grille alone is worth taking note of. The Acura Precision concept, which will make its public debut on August 18th during Monterey Car Week, has one of the most outlandishly bright LED grilles that I’ve ever seen on an EV.

Along with the Honda Prologue, the Acura Precision will be manufactured at GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee, plant, where the Cadillac Lyriq is currently being built. Under the agreement with GM, Acura is designing the exteriors and interiors, while the platform will be engineered by GM to support Honda and Acura’s specifications.

Acura is targeting 2040 for the year it will go fully electric, much like Honda.

🧊 World's largest ice sheet crumbling faster than previously thought, satellite imagery shows

The first-of-its-kind study, led by researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) near Los Angeles and published in the journal Nature, raises new concern about how fast climate change is weakening Antarctica's floating ice shelves and accelerating the rise of global sea levels.

The study's key finding was that the net loss of Antarctic ice from coastal glacier chunks "calving" off into the ocean
is nearly as great as the net amount of ice that scientists already knew was being lost due to thinning caused by the melting of ice shelves from below by warming seas.

Taken together, thinning and calving have reduced the mass of Antarctica's ice shelves by 12 trillion tons since 1997, double the previous estimate, the analysis concluded.

💣 FBI searched Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence for classified nuclear documents

The FBI sought to locate classified documents related to nuclear weapons, among other items, when agents searched former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, this week.

Since the search, top congressional Republicans have rushed to Trump's defense, casting the move as politically motivated. The former President has denied all wrongdoing, claiming the investigation is intended to derail his potential bid to return to the White House.

Several media organizations filed a motion the same day to further request that all documents related to the search warrant be made public.

🚨🚨JUST IN | Trump says he won’t oppose release of search warrant details

Former US President Donald Trump has responded to US Attorney General Merrick Garland and stated that he will not oppose the release of the FBI search warrant documents the US Department of Justice is seeking to unseal.

In a message posted on the Truth social media platform, Trump wrote:

“Not only will I not oppose the release of documents related to the unAmerican, unwarranted, and unnecessary raid and break-in of my home in Palm Beach, Florida, Mar-a-Lago, I am going a step further by ENCOURAGING the immediate release of those documents, even though they have been drawn up by radical left Democrats and possible future political opponents, who have a strong and powerful vested interest in attacking me, much as they have done for the last 6 years…”

😕 Norwegian authorities say they are considering putting down a walrus that won hearts basking in the sun of the Oslo fjord, because of the danger to the public and itself from sightseers.

▪️ Despite repeated appeals to the public to keep their distance from the walrus – a young female weighing 600kg (1,300 pounds) that has been nicknamed Freya – the mammal continues to attract big crowds, the fisheries directorate has said.

▪️ It released a photograph of a group of onlookers crowding near the animal.

🗯 “The public’s reckless behaviour and failure to follow authorities’ recommendations could put lives in danger,” said Nadia Jdaini, a spokesperson for the fisheries agency.

🗣 “We are now exploring other measures, and euthanasia may be a real alternative.”

▪️ Freya, named for the Norse goddess of beauty and love, has made headlines since July 17, when she was first spotted in the waters of the Norwegian capital.
