▪️A bipartisan group of five US congressional lawmakers is in Taiwan. The trip comes less than two weeks after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan prompted China to react sharply.

The delegation, led by Senator Ed Markey, arrived in Taiwan by plane on Sunday. Taiwan's foreign ministry says the legislators will meet President Tsai Ing-wen and other figures to discuss security, the economy, and trade during their two-day stay.

The ministry said that the visit highlights Washington's strong support for Taiwan and demonstrates a friendship that is not afraid of China's threats. Pelosi visited Taiwan on August 2 and 3, becoming the first incumbent US House speaker to travel there in 25 years.

🚃🌬A severe chemical leak accident forced the evacuation of more than 100 homes in Perris, 122 kilometers east of Los Angeles downtown, Friday morning and prompted the closure of the 215 Freeway in both directions.

NBC 4 news channel reported that Cal Fire Riverside County received a call about the chemical leak around 7:40 p.m. Thursday when someone discovered a large plume of smoke coming from a rail car along the railway parallel to the freeway in the town with over 77,000 residents.

Officials identified the leaking chemical as styrene, saying some chemical reaction inside the tank occurred when the chemical used in latex, synthetic rubber, and polystyrene resins was stored in an overheating situation.

Cal Fire Riverside County Chief John Crater spoke with experts across the country about the potential impacts of the leak, adding, "what they're telling me is this can resolve itself in two days."

🏛🚨A man killed himself early Sunday in Washington D.C. after ramming the U.S. Capitol barrier. He drove his car into a barricade near the U.S. Capitol, then began firing gunshots in the air before fatally shooting himself, according to police, who said he did not seem to be targeting any member of Congress.

This event comes when law enforcement authorities across the country face increasing threats, and federal officials have warned about the potential of violent attacks on government buildings.

Authorities said the man, identified as Richard A. York III, 29, of Delaware, crashed into the barricade and that as he got out of the car, the vehicle became engulfed in flames. The man then opened fire, firing several shots as police approached.

Capitol Police said the man shot himself as the officers neared. He was later pronounced dead.

▪️A sheriff's deputy has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting two women in custody at a Southern California jail, authorities said.

The 30-year-old deputy with the Orange County Sheriff's Department could face charges including assault under the color of authority and sexual activity between a peace officer and inmate, according to a department statement.

An investigation began Aug. 8 when staff at Theo Lacy jail intercepted unspecified communication that described the alleged misconduct, the statement said. The deputy is suspected of establishing an inappropriate relationship with two female inmates starting in May.

“He is alleged to have sexually assaulted the female inmates separately on multiple occasions by sexually touching them over their clothes and showing them pornographic videos while in their housing locations,” the department statement said. ⛽️The average U.S. price of regular-grade gasoline plummeted 45 cents over the past three weeks to $4.10 per gallon. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey said Sunday that the continued decline comes as crude oil costs remain low.

"The drop of a dollar per gallon has not been enough to restore motorist demand, which is in retreat due to sustained high price levels," Lundberg said. The average price at the pump has been down a dollar over the past nine weeks, but it's 85 cents higher than it was one year ago.

Nationwide, the highest average price for regular-grade gas was in the San Francisco Bay Area, at $5.36 per gallon. The lowest average was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at $3.38 per gallon.
