😳 People in Switzerland may go on riots if energy shortages occur in the upcoming winter, the Swiss police chief, Fredy Fassler, said on Saturday.

🗯 "Power outage... will have serious consequences. Imagine the situation when we can no longer withdraw money from ATMs, we can no longer pay by card in a store or refuel at a gas station. The heaters are no longer working. The streets are all dark. In that case it would be possible to imagine that the population would rebel," Fassler told the Blick newspaper.

⛽️ Climate bill’s unlikely beneficiary: US oil and gas industry

While the Inflation Reduction Act concentrates on clean energy incentives that could drastically reduce overall US emissions, it also buoys oil and gas interests by mandating leasing of vast areas of public lands and off the nation’s coasts. And it locks renewables and fossil fuels together: If the Biden administration wants solar and wind on public lands, it must offer new oil and gas leases first.

A Department of Energy analysis said the law’s leasing provisions “may lead to some increase” in carbon pollution, but that other provisions would cut 35 tons of greenhouse gas for every new ton of fossil fuel pollution.

The San Francisco-based climate research group Energy Innovation predicted up to 55 million tons (50 million metric tons) of additional carbon dioxide annually from new leasing.

💸 Many Americans have two jobs to cope with the expensive life.

A record number of Americans are working two jobs to keep up with their bills and cope with higher prices for gas, groceries, and housing as inflation ramps the overall cost of living.

People working multiple jobs in the United States increased from 4 percent of the working population in April 2020 to 4.8 percent in June 2022, according to the St. Louis Federal Reserve. Inflation hit a 40-year high in June in the US, driving up the prices of general goods.

More Americans than ever now have two jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which started keeping records in 1994. In June, 426,000 Americans worked a 70-hour week, according to the bureau, an increase from February 2020 when 308,000 worked that many hours per week.

🔥 Massive fire boat yard in Mattapoisett

A huge fire at a Massachusetts marina turned several boats, buildings and vehicles into burned-out shells, producing a plume of black smoke so thick it was picked up by weather radar.

A firefighting vessel could be seen pulled up to the dock,
getting as close as possible as it sprayed a jet of water onto one of the smoldering sailboats. “A boat caught fire in one of the sheds, and it went up very, very fast,” Tim Price, a mechanic at the boatyard, “Everything went up. I think we lost everything.”

The cause of blaze is under investigation, and officials at the Mattapoisett fire and police departments said no one was available to comment.

American Airlines announced that it had recently agreed to buy 20 Overture aircraft from Boom, with the option to purchase an additional 40 planes if all goes well.

At the start of the year, Boom announced it would build a manufacturing facility at North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad International Airport. The company expects to begin production in 2024, though the plant’s first completed jet won’t fly until sometime in 2026.

🏭 58% of human infectious diseases worsen by climate change

Climate change can exacerbate full infectious diseases that humans come in contact with worldwide, from common waterborne viruses to deadly diseases like plague, new research shows.

Researchers found that 58 percent of known human infectious illnesses, including malaria, hantavirus, cholera, and anthrax, have been worsened by extreme weather such as floods, heat waves, and droughts, according to a new study published by Nature Climate Change.

With climate change influencing more than 1,000 transmission pathways like those and climate hazards increasingly globally, we concluded that expecting societies to adapt to all of them successfully isn’t a realistic option.

The world will need to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that are driving climate change to reduce these risks
