🚗 Ford is laying off 3,000 employees
The company is laying off employees and contract workers, with the cuts primarily affecting staff in the US, Canada, and India. Chairman Bill Ford and CEO Jim Farley sent a memo on Monday informing staff of the layoffs, with affected workers being told later this week.
“Building this future requires changing and reshaping virtually all aspects of the way we have operated for more than a century,” Ford and Farley said in the memo.
Ford isn’t the only automotive company to lay off employees in recent weeks. Rivian laid off 6 percent of its staff, Ford-backed startup Argo AI laid off about 150 employees, and Tesla laid off workers who helped train its Autopilot AI system.

⚖️ Elon Musk subpoenas former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey
As Twitter and Elon Musk prepare for their October 17th trial date in the Delaware Court of Chancery to argue over his attempt to break their $44 billion acquisition agreement, Musk’s legal team submitted a subpoena for evidence from a familiar face: former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.
Dorsey stepped down as Twitter CEO for the second time last November and handed control of the company he helped create to Parag Agrawal.
It’s tough to say what information Dorsey has that Musk couldn’t obtain by just texting him! But with billions of dollars on the line, Musk’s legal team is casting out all lines to support his argument the company is not telling the truth about measurements of bots and spam among the daily active users on its platform.

🐉 House of the Dragon premiere crashes HBO Max
The premiere of "House of the Dragon" drew 9.986 million viewers across linear and HBO Max platforms in the US Sunday night, the largest audience for any new original series in the history of HBO. The premiere also marked the largest series launch on HBO Max across the US, LatAm, and EMEA.
Besides the debut, there have been plenty of complaints about the HBO Max streaming apps since they launched, it appears that most of the people having problems are using an Amazon Fire TV platform, or a Fire Stick.
In a statement, HBO’s Chris Willard said, “We’re aware of a small portion of users attempting to connect via Fire TV devices that are having issues and are in the process of resolving for those impacted users.”

👷♂️ 7,000 construction workers wanted for Intel chip plants
Ohio’s largest-ever economic development project comes with a big employment challenge: how to find 7,000 construction workers in an already booming building environment when there’s also a national shortage of people working in the trades.
At hand is the $20 billion semiconductor manufacturing operation near the state’s capital, announced by Intel earlier this year. When the two factories, known as fabs, open in 2025, the facility will employ 3,000 people with an average salary of around $135,000.
The site’s 5 million square feet (464,515 square meters) is equivalent to nearly nine football fields. To win the project, Ohio offered Intel roughly $2 billion in incentives, including a 30-year tax break.

💉 Pfizer seeks OK of updated COVID vaccine booster for fall
The company asked US regulators Monday to authorize its combination COVID-19 vaccine that adds protection against the newest omicron relatives. The Food and Drug Administration ordered vaccine makers to tweak their shots to target BA.4 and BA.5 that are better than ever at dodging immunity from earlier vaccination or infection.
Moderna is expected to file a similar application soon for updated boosters for adults. The US has a contract to buy 105 million of the Pfizer doses and 66 million Moderna ones, assuming FDA gives the green light. For now at least, BA.5 currently is causing nearly all COVID-19 infections in the US and much of the world.

🎓 White House leaning toward canceling $10,000 in student loans
According to multiple sources familiar with the discussions, the plan is designed to offer forgiveness to individuals who earn less than $125,000 per year. In recent days, White House officials have been in communication with lawmakers to discuss their thinking on student loan debt forgiveness, ahead of the current pause on payments expiring.
The White House has suggested in the past that US President Joe Biden was considering canceling $10,000 per borrower - excluding those who earn more than $125,000 a year. Some Democratic lawmakers and advocates have been urging Biden to broadly cancel up to $50,000 in student loan debt per borrower, but the president has consistently pushed back on canceling that much.

📄 Over 300 classified documents recovered from Trump's Florida home
The US government has recovered more than 300 documents with classified markings from former President Donald Trump's Florida estate, including material from the CIA, the National Security Agency and the FBI. The figures represent three batches of documents that federal officials have recovered in recent months amid growing concern Trump had absconded with the files after he left the White House.
It’s unclear if Trump could face any charges related to the documents. Trump has castigated those involved in carrying out the search, declaring the FBI’s actions a politicization of the Justice Department that has never happened to a former president. The DOJ’s investigation into the documents is ongoing, as are several other government inquiries into Trump’s behavior leading up to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

📃 Politico has alleged that the US has been supplying Ukraine with weapons which Washington hasn't mentioned when it has announced new packages of security assistance.
It is said that the US has been sending high-speed anti-radar missiles (HARM) to Ukraine for some time under the guise of "counter-radar capability". Washington might also have provided Ukraine with army tactical missile systems (ATACMS), which would have given Ukrainian troops the capability of hitting the Saki airbase in Crimea
