🐟“Missed opportunity” – UN fails to reach agreement to protect marine life
The fifth round of talks at the UN to establish a UN Ocean Treaty has ended without agreement. The proposed treaty looked to set the rules for protecting biodiversity in two-thirds of the world’s oceanic areas that lie outside countries' territorial waters.
“While progress has been made, particularly on ocean sanctuaries, members of the High Ambition Coalition and countries like the USA have moved too slowly to find compromises, despite their commitments…… Further delay means ocean destruction. We are sad and disappointed. While countries continue to talk, the oceans and all those who rely on them will suffer," a member of Greenpeace’s Protect the Oceans campaign said.
Likewise, Klaudija Cremers from the IDDRI think tank, which participated at the negotiations, described the failure as a "missed opportunity".

🥵☀️No escape from the heat.
The extreme heatwaves that have been covering parts of the globe this summer are likely to hit most of the world between three and ten times more frequently by 2100, a study published in Communications Earth and Environment shows.
"The record-breaking heat events of recent summers will become much more common in places like North America and Europe [and] for many places close to the equator, by 2100 more than half the year will be a challenge to work outside," the lead author from Harvard University claimed.
According to the experts, the situation may turn even worse in the tropics, where people might suffer 51C heat most days of the year, which pushes the limits of human survival.

➡️Aiming to turn months of legislative accomplishments into political energy, US President Joe Biden sought to underscore voters' choice in the congressional midterm elections as he led a kickoff rally and a fundraiser in Maryland on Thursday.
Speaking to hundreds of the party faithful in Maryland, just outside Washington, Biden sought to build on growing energy in the party, which believes it can fend off a threatened Republican victory in the Nov 8 vote.
Earlier, in remarks ahead of the speech, Biden likened Trump's "Make America Great Again" brand as "extreme." The Republican National Committee called Biden's comments "despicable."
"Biden forced Americans out of their jobs, transferred money from working families to Harvard lawyers, and sent our country into a recession while families can't afford gas and groceries," said spokesperson Nathan Brand. "Democrats don't care about suffering Americans; they never did."

✝️Pope Francis elevated 20 more churchmen to the rank of cardinal on Saturday, formally expanding those now eligible to vote for his successor in case he dies or resigns — the latter a step he has said he’d consider if the need arises.
Of the churchmen being named new cardinals in the consistory ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica, 16 are younger than 80 and thus eligible to participate in a conclave — the ritual-shrouded, locked-door assembly of cardinals who cast paper ballots to elect a new pontiff.
The 85-year-old Francis has now named 83 of the 132 cardinals currently young enough to join a conclave. The others were appointed by the previous two popes, St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, whose unexpected retirement in 2013 paved the way for Francis to be elected.
With the eight batches of cardinals Francis has named, prospects are boosted that whoever becomes the next pontiff will share his vision for the church's future.

🌊☔️🌨Floods have killed over 900 people in Pakistan and destroyed about 220,000 homes. The government speaks of a "climate-induced humanitarian disaster of epic proportions."
The situation in the country's southwest is critical: All four highways connecting Balochistan with the other provinces are either blocked or destroyed. Rail traffic has had to be suspended, and since important fiber-optic cables have been damaged, all regional communications are also down. About 220,000 houses were destroyed, and 33 million people are without a permanent home.
According to official figures, the floods, which mainly affect the south, are comparable to those of 2010, when more than 2,000 people died, and almost one-fifth of the country was underwater.
