🧊 ‘Zombie ice’ from Greenland will raise sea level

Zombie ice from the massive Greenland ice sheet will eventually raise global sea level by at least 10 inches (27 centimeters) on its own, according to a study released Monday. “It’s dead ice. It’s just going to melt and disappear from the ice sheet,” William Colgan, a glaciologist at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, said in an interview. “This ice has been consigned to the ocean, regardless of what climate (emissions) scenario we take now.”

The unavoidable ten inches in the study is more than twice as much sea level rise as scientists had previously expected from the melting of Greenland’s ice sheet. The study in the journal Nature Climate Change said it could reach as much as 30 inches (78 centimeters) for likely sea level rise from Greenland ice melt by the year 2100.

🚨 Young man suspected of killing 3 peoples in Detroit

A 19-year-old man suspected of randomly killing three people on Detroit streets over roughly two hours may have been emboldened when he didn’t encounter police after the first shooting, the mayor said Monday.

Police still were sorting out details while a suspect who may have a mental illness remained in custody. The man was peacefully arrested at home after a 12-hour search Sunday, following a tip from someone close to him.

Detroit has limited use of ShotSpotter, a gunshot-detection technology. It’s used in some precincts but not in the area where the shootings occurred. The City Council in June postponed a vote on expansion.

💧 Mississippi residents brace for flood as river reaches crest

People in and around Mississippi’s capital city were bracing for possible flooding Monday as the Pearl River approached a crest after last week’s heavy rainfall. Some Jackson residents started moving furniture and appliances out of their homes late last week. Others stocked up on sandbags. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency had deployed 126,000 sandbags to act as water barriers in preparation for flooding.

A bridge crossing the Pearl River near downtown Jackson was closed as the water level rose. Trees were partly submerged and power lines shook in the strong current Monday

The Mississippi floodwaters arrive after severe flooding caused 39 death and destruction in Kentucky last month. The Red Cross opened a temporary shelter at the Jackson Police Department Training Academy.

🔋 Honda and LG Chem will build a $4.4 billion EV battery factory in the US

The two companies aim to begin construction in early 2023 to enable the start of mass production of lithium-ion battery cells by the end of 2025. Honda and its subsidiary Acura have plans to release 30 hybrid, battery-electric, and fuel-cell vehicles by 2030.

The factory, which aims to have an annual production capacity of approximately 40GWh, is likely to be located in Ohio. The state is also the site of a future $2.3 billion battery plant that’s being built by LG Chem and General Motors.

Localizing battery production in the US is important for automakers that want to qualify for the $7,500-per-vehicle tax credit, which requires EVs to be assembled in the US. Foreign automakers have expressed concerns that the new tax credits could discriminate against companies without manufacturing facilities in the US.

🚘 Tesla can’t stop employees from wearing union swag

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) said that Tesla’s current dress code policy was unlawful. Specifically, the part where it only allowed employees to wear Tesla or other pre-approved black tee shirts. That policy meant union swag was not allowed — a hindrance to anyone trying to organize or show union solidarity.

In 2019, a judge ruled that the company had been sabotaging unionization efforts. The NLRB also forced Musk to delete anti-union tweets from 2018.

While it might be difficult for union supporters at Tesla to wear a red shirt (the common color for union solidarity) with the UAW logo, Tesla cannot restrict them from wearing the logo itself.

🌱 Biden faces growing pressure to legalize weed

Democratic Senate hopeful John Fetterman is calling on President Joe Biden to decriminalize marijuana before visiting Pennsylvania next week.

“It’s long past time that we finally decriminalize marijuana,” Fetterman said in a Monday statement. “The president needs to use his executive authority to begin descheduling marijuana, I would love to see him do this prior to his visit to Pittsburgh.”

Fetterman is a longtime advocate for cannabis reform and has made legalization a key issue throughout his Senate campaign. Biden has previously opposed fully legalizing marijuana, but his position shifted toward decriminalization by the time he became the Democratic party’s nominee for president in 2020. Despite the platform, Biden has yet to take any significant action to reschedule or reform cannabis regulation.

🔋France's Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, speaking at the annual conference organized by France's largest employers' federation Medef, called for an immediate halt to the unnecessary energy consumption. She also warned that the government may have to ration energy this winter, and urged company executives to do what they could to curb consumption.

🗣 "If we end up with rationing, companies will be the first to suffer, and unfortunately we need to be prepared for it," she added.

She also ordered every government ministry to cut 10 percent of their energy use within the next two years

🏊‍♂️ French tax authorities are using AI to locate thousands of undeclared private pools, resulting in a tax bill of about 10Mln euros ($10Mln) for the owners because of the increase in value to their property.

The system identifies pools from aerial photographs and checks whether they exist on taxpayer databases. During the year when the system was under trial, 20,356 swimming pools were identified.

Tax officials are now considering the possibility of rolling the system out to detect undeclared extensions, outbuildings and verandas. However, the tax authorities' technicians state that the system cannot yet determine whether a rectangular shape in an aerial photograph is an extension or a tent, a terrace or even a tarpaulin placed on the ground
