🤔Hungry? There's a solution for hunger-stricken African nations from the UK: farming... insects.

🇬🇧The UK is encouraging hunger-stricken Africans to eat insects, funding projects aiming to develop the practice in the DRC and Zimbabwe, the Guardian reported.

In an attempt to realize the substantial on-paper benefits of insect-eating, a £50,000 UK aid project in the DRC is putting African caterpillars, migratory locusts and black soldier flies on the menu.

The project is listed on the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s development tracker website as seeking “to promote the production of insects for human food and for use in the manufacture of animal feeds”.

🔹The average life expectancy of people in the United States dropped for a second consecutive year in 2021, with the decline to 76 years and one month representing a fall of almost a full year from 2020, according to a government report released on Wednesday.

Among racial groups in the US, Asians had the highest life expectancy at 83 years and six months. In the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the estimated US life span was shortened by nearly three years. The last comparable decrease happened in the early 1940s, during World War II.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials blamed the coronavirus for about half the decline in life expectancy in 2021, a year when vaccinations became widely available. Still, new virus variants caused waves of hospitalizations and deaths. Other contributors to the decline are long-standing maladies: drug overdoses, heart disease, suicide, and chronic liver disease.

📈The cost-of-living crisis in the United Kingdom could plunge 3 million more people into poverty next year, and household income is set to drop by the steepest rate in a century, a new report has found.

London-based think tank the Resolution Foundation predicts that real household income will fall by 5 percent next year and drop again by 6 percent in 2024. Taken together, this would represent a more drastic drop in revenue than the country experienced during the 2009-10 financial crisis or the recession of the 1970s.

The winner of the race to be the leader of the governing Conservative Party and the country's new prime minister should be named on Sept 5, and the authors of the report said the new leader risks a disastrous legacy if he or she does not take firm measures to address a "terrifying" living standards crisis.

🔹A judge ruled on Friday that Facebook* owner Meta* repeatedly and intentionally violated Washington campaign finance law and must pay penalties, the Washington state Attorney General's Office said.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson's office said the penalties would be determined later and that the court also denied Meta*'s effort to invalidate Washington's law on political ad transparency. The oral ruling happened during a hearing before King County Superior Court Judge Douglass North, The Seattle Times reported.

In a statement, Ferguson said his office defeated Facebook*'s "cynical attempt" to gut Washington's campaign-finance transparency law. The social media giant, which also owns Instagram and other social media platforms, has repeatedly objected to the requirements and argued in a summary judgment motion that Washington's law "unduly burdens political speech" and is "virtually impossible to comply with."

◾️A high school student in Baltimore was shot and killed Friday in the school's parking lot as students were leaving for the day, police said.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said a student from another city school approached the victim while walking through the Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School parking lot, and the encounter became heated. The gunman shot the victim multiple times and fled on foot, Harrison said.

School resource officers were in the parking lot when the shooting occurred and chased the gunman. Harrison said the suspect was arrested "within seconds," and the gun, which the suspect discarded, was recovered.

The victim was rushed to a hospital but later died of his injuries. Harrison did not identify the victim or the suspect or provide their ages. Harrison would only say they were high-school age.

🔎A Los Angeles federal judge threw out an indictment Friday charging a dive boat captain with manslaughter in the deaths of 34 people in a 2019 fire aboard a vessel anchored off the Southern California coast. The ruling came on the third anniversary of one of the deadliest maritime disasters in recent U.S. history.

Captain Jerry Boylan, 68, failed to follow safety rules, federal prosecutors said. He was accused of “misconduct, negligence, and inattention” by failing to train his crew, conduct fire drills, and have a roving night watchman on the boat when the fire ignited.

But the indictment failed to specify that Boylan acted with gross negligence, which U.S. District Judge George Wu said was a required element to prove the crime of seaman’s manslaughter and must be listed in the indictment. Boylan originally was indicted on 34 counts of seaman’s manslaughter, with each carrying a possible prison term of 10 years if he was convicted.
