🚀 NASA's 2nd attempt at launching moon rocket was ruined by fuel leak

▪️New moon rocket from NASA suffered another dangerous fuel leak, forcing launch controllers to call off their second attempt to send a crew capsule into lunar orbit with test dummies.

▪️Launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson and her team did they best to stop the leak: stopping and restarting the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen in hopes of removing the gap around a seal in the supply line. They tried that twice, in fact, and also flushed helium through the line. But the leak persisted.

▪️After four hours of futile effort, launch director Blackwell-Thompson finally halted the countdown.

▪️The first attempt earlier in the week was also marred by escaping hydrogen, but those leaks were elsewhere on the 322-foot (98-meter) rocket, the most powerful ever built by NASA.

“We’re watching the death of artistry unfold before our eyes”

😱🖼️AI-generated artwork wins first prize at a Colorado State Fair. Human artists infuriated.

Jason Allen, "Sincarnate" on Twitter, revealed that he won first place at an art competition, even though he himself didn’t create the piece. He instead used an AI program called Midjourney to create the artwork based on a text prompt. Allen took the generated image and touched it up in Photoshop and called it “Théâtre D'opéra Spatial.”

Netizens have expressed their fury concerning the case: “We’re watching the death of artistry unfold right before our eyes — if creative jobs aren’t safe from machines, then even high-skilled jobs are in danger of becoming obsolete. What will we have then?”

🔸During the search at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's residence, federal agents collected more than 20 boxes that included more than a hundred documents marked with different degrees of classification: from confidential to top secret.

According to the complete list of what was seized by the FBI during the search, which was made public this Friday by a Florida court, more than 10,000 documents that by law belong to the US government were collected from Trump's residence as well as about 90 empty folders with marks indicating that they contained classified material or that they should be returned to the White House secretarial staff or a military assistant, according to the British newspaper The Guardian.

On Wednesday, Trump's lawyers said in a court filing that Trump's keeping sensitive files at his Florida residence "should never have been cause for alarm." They further noted that the search at Mar-a-Lago had been "unprecedented, unnecessary, and lacking in legal support."

📲A Google employee who became a high-profile opponent of the tech giant’s $1bn artificial intelligence and surveillance contract with the Israeli military has announced her resignation.

Ariel Koren, a marketing manager, will be leaving the company this week, citing what she said was its creation of a hostile work environment due to her social activism.

The controversy began when Koren protested Google’s $1.2bn collaboration with Amazon and the Israeli military on a program called Project Nimbus. She spent more than a year organizing her protest to persuade Google to pull out of the deal, including circulating petitions, lobbying executives, and speaking out to news organizations. Koren, who is Jewish, has worked for the company for more than seven years and said Google’s actions to stifle outspoken workers – not just herself – have been par for the course.

📺The CNN network faces critics for altering the lighting for President Biden’s Thursday address, softening the blood-red hues to calmer shades of pink. The illumination for President Biden’s Thursday address softened the blood-red hues to quieter shades of pink.

The president came in for sarcastic mockery online for the harsh black and red backdrop, with many comparing the optics to “Star Wars” and “V for Vendetta.”

“CNN appears to have tweaked the video of Biden’s speech from demonic red to Pepto-Bismol pink. Very helpful, as we needed a lot of Pepto-Bismol to get through this!” said former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Though Biden promised to deliver a unifying speech on the “battle for the soul of the nation,” partisans blasted him as divisive and fear-mongering. Many latched on to his claims that “MAGA Republicans” threatened the country — something the president later walked back.

🎬“National Cinema Day” on Saturday brought the big screen to moviegoers for a small price -no more than $3- as American theaters looked to fill seats during the late summer lull.

The one-day nationwide promotion was offered on more than 30,000 screens in more than 3,000 theaters, including the major chains of AMC and Regal Cinemas. The Cinema Foundation, a nonprofit arm of the National Association of Theater Owners, announced the plan on Aug. 28 and said all major film studios also were participating.

Labor Day weekend is traditionally one of the slowest weekends in theaters.
After more than two years of the pandemic, movie theaters rebounded significantly over the summer, seeing business return to nearly pre-pandemic levels. Films like “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Minions: Rise of Gru,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Jurassic World Dominion” pushed the domestic summer box office to $3.3 billion in ticket sales as of Aug. 21, according to data firm Comscore.

🚙Seventeen states with vehicle emission standards tied to rules established in California face weighty decisions on whether to follow that state’s strictest-in-the-nation new regulations that require all new cars, pickups, and SUVs to be electric or hydrogen-powered by 2035.

Washington, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, and Vermont are expected to adopt California’s ban on new gasoline-fueled vehicles. Colorado and Pennsylvania are among the states that probably won’t. The legal ground is a bit murkier in Minnesota, where the state’s “Clean Cars” rule has been a political minefield and the subject of a legal fight. Meanwhile, Republicans are rebelling in Virginia.

The Minnesota Auto Dealers Association says its reading of state and federal law is that the new California rules kick in automatically in the state, and it’s making that case in court as it tries to block them.

💧Jackson officials said a treatment plant at the center of water woes in Mississippi’s capital made “significant” gains overnight and into Saturday. According to a news release, the O.B. Curtis Water Plant’s total plant output increased to 86 pounds per square inch, approaching the city’s goal of 87 PSI or better.

“The outlook is very stable,” the city said in the statement. “However, additional challenges as repairs and adjustments are made do leave the potential for fluctuations in progress.”

The city said most customers should have water pressure, and only a few remaining pockets in south Jackson may still be experiencing low or no pressure.

The city said that teams from Georgia and Florida rural water associations are also on-site, assisting with repairing and restoring many automated systems supporting better water production and water quality management.
