🔋 California faces grid-straining extreme heat

Operators of California’s electricity grid acknowledged that a miscommunication led to a small number of power shutoffs during a period of great strain, even as the state faced another day of extreme heat that could prompt much larger rolling blackouts.

This week the demand reached 52,000 megawatts and set a new record as triple-digit temperatures blanketed much of the state. Sacramento hit a record high of 116 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius).

Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed legislation to keep the state’s last nuclear plant open for five years beyond its planned 2025 closure, and he suggested that the plant could run even longer if needed.

All UK lawmakers will have an opportunity to take the oath after the 10-day mourning period, but it is "not a formal requirement," according to the report.

✈️ 2 killed in plane crash at Santa Monica Airport

Two people were killed when a single-engine airplane crashed and caught fire Thursday at Southern California’s Santa Monica Airport, authorities said. TV news footage showed the charred wreckage of an aircraft on the tarmac with multiple fire trucks at the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. The safety board will be in charge of the investigation and will provide additional updates. The FAA identified the plane as a Piper Sport.
