😂Weather alert: extreme temperatures and hate speech

📊Hot and cold weather impacts on the use of hate speeches on social networks, according to research published by the Lancet Health.

▪️Scientists used a supervised machine-learning approach to identify hate messages in a dataset containing around four billion geolocated tweets from 773 cities across the US.

▪️Then, they statistically evaluated the changes in daily hate tweets against local temperatures, isolating the temperature influence from confounding factors using binned panel regression models.

▪️The prevalence of hate tweets was lowest at moderate temperatures (12 to 21°C), while marked increases in the number of hate tweets were observed at hotter and colder temperatures, reaching up to 12.5% for cold temperature extremes (–6 to –3°C) and up to 22% for hot temperature extremes (42 to 45°C).

🚇 Advocates make push for Montreal-to-Boston passenger rail

Rail advocates are dusting off a proposal for passenger train service between Montreal and Boston, riding a renewed interest in train travel to bolster a concept that has been around for more than a decade.

A market study suggests about 4,000 people travel daily between Montreal and Boston, and about 1,000 of them would opt for rail service if it’s available. The service would be profitable with only 200 riders.

The proposal comes against a backdrop of a rail revival, and more than $100 billion in railway infrastructure funding approved by Congress. The most optimistic view is that the project would need at least two years to become a reality

🚫 In Indiana, a shifting abortion landscape without clinics

Indiana’s Legislature became the first in the nation to approve abortion restrictions after the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb signed the ban into law Aug. 5.

The ban, which has exceptions, prohibits abortion clinics from providing any abortion care, leaving such services solely to hospitals or outpatient surgical centers owned by hospitals.

Last year, the majority of abortions in Indiana happened in abortion clinics. Hospitals performed 133 of the state’s 8,414 abortions, according to a 2021 annual report from the state Department of Health, while the remaining 8,281 took place in abortion clinics.

🔖 South Dakota tribes buy lands of a massacre site

The Oglala Sioux and the Cheyenne River Sioux said the purchase of 40 acres of the land on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation was an act of cooperation to ensure the area was preserved as a sacred site.

More than 200 Native Americans were killed at Wounded Knee in 1890, one of the deadliest massacres in US history. The Oglala Sioux tribe will pay $255,000 and the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe will pay $245,000 for the site.

In 2013, film star Johnny Depp announced a plan to buy the property and donate it to the Oglala Sioux tribe but was criticized for trying to capitalize on the film by making unsubstantiated claims of having Native American ancestry. Depp did not follow through on the purchase.
