🇧🇷Six people died, and two others were injured on Saturday when an unauthorized nursing home in the eastern part of Sao Paulo, Brazil, caught fire, said police and municipal authorities.

The fire started in a dining room and spread to the other rooms, killing five elderly people and a caregiver, said Aaron Barbosa, spokesman for the Sao Paulo Fire Department.

Named "Lar da Vovo," the nursing home lacked a sanitary operation permit and was also operating without authorization from the fire department.

Neighbors said that they were unaware that a nursing home was operating there. The fire lasted about four hours, according to witnesses.

🔎UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Saturday that developed economies are responsible for the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere throughout history. The secretary-general made the remarks in a press briefing in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi during his visit to the flood-affected areas of the country.

"Those impacts are skyrocketing," he said, adding that "people living in high climatic vulnerability conditions, including in South Asia, are 15 times more likely to die from climate impacts."

In the wake of the flood-disaster Pakistan has been suffering, the secretary-general called upon the international community to devise a new debt relief mechanism for the affected countries. He further advocated a debt swap mechanism that a country, instead of paying the debt to the creditors, should be able to use that money to invest in climate resilience, sustainable infrastructure, and the green transition of their economies.

💻🥸According to a poll by the consulting firm Gallup, a trend dubbed “quiet quitting’’ is spreading across workplaces in the United States, with workers notably less passionate about their jobs, looking to set boundaries, and refusing to work at night or on weekends.

The survey said more than half of the workers are “not engaged” and do the minimum required. The number of “actively disengaged” people jumped to 18% from 14% in 2020.

The pandemic caused people to rethink their lives and career aspirations. Also, new working modes, including remote work, have reduced people’s connection to organizations, and some employees may not feel their employers care about them.

🔎On Monday, thousands of nurses in Minnesota left work to protest those conditions. With over 15,000 nurses from 16 hospitals in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and the surrounding region participating, the work stoppage represents the largest private sector nurse strike in U.S. history.

The nurses, all unionized members of the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA), voted to move forward with the strike last month. They announced the plan on Sept. 1, adhering to a legal requirement that health care workers provide at least ten days’ notice to their employer when preparing for a work stoppage. The strike is expected to last three days.

The strikes come as more Americans support labor unions than ever in half a century. Earlier this month, Gallup’s most recent Work and Education Survey revealed that 71% now say they support organized labor. The last time approval was so high was in 1965.

🔹Divisions over LGBTQ-related policies have flared recently at several religious colleges in the United States. On Monday, there was a dramatic new turn at one of the most rancorous battlegrounds – Seattle Pacific University.

A group of students, faculty, and staff at the Christian university sued leaders of the board of trustees for refusing to scrap an employment policy barring people in same-sex relationships from full-time jobs at SPU.

That lawsuit eventually was settled out of court, but it intensified criticism of the hiring policy.
Through surveys and petitions, it’s clear that most of the faculty and student body oppose the policy. Yet, a majority of the trustees reaffirmed it in May – triggering resignations by other trustees and protests by students that included a prolonged sit-in at the school’s administrative offices.
