📉The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than 1,250 points Tuesday, its steepest sell-off in more than two years after a government report showed that inflation maintains a surprisingly strong grip on the U.S. economy.
Bond prices also fell sharply, sending their yields higher, after a report showed inflation decelerated only to 8.3% in August, instead of the 8.1% economists expected.
The hotter-than-expected reading has traders bracing for the Federal Reserve to ultimately raise interest rates even higher than expected to combat inflation, with all the risks for the economy that entails. Fears about higher rates sent prices dropping for everything from gold to cryptocurrencies to crude oil. Technology and other high-growth companies fell more than the rest of the market because they’re most at risk from higher rates.

⚖️West Virginia lawmakers on Tuesday passed a sweeping abortion ban that prohibits the procedure even in the earliest days of pregnancy, with limited exceptions in cases of rape, incest, and when the mother's health is at risk.
The bill, which now goes to Governor Jim Justice for his signature, is the second abortion ban passed by a state after the deeply conservative U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 49-year-old Roe v Wade decision that established a constitutional right to the procedure.
The measure, which Justice is expected to sign, comes as differences are beginning to emerge among Republicans over how strict about making abortion bans ahead of the November elections that will decide control of Congress.

◾Ken Starr, who headed the investigation that led to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton for lying about his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, died today. He was 76.
Starr died in Houston, Texas, of complications from surgery, his family said in a statement. A former judge and conservative legal stalwart, Starr was best known for leading the probe that resulted in Clinton’s December 1998 impeachment by the then Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
The Democratic president was acquitted by the Senate the following year. Starr’s involvement with Clinton began when he was appointed special counsel in 1994 to investigate a land deal known as Whitewater involving Bill and Hillary Clinton.

I arrived in Samarkand 🇺🇿 late at night on Tuesday for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization leaders' summit. Had to take a plane from Moscow and then a high-speed train across Uzbekistan from Tashkent to Samarkand. A very warm welcome and lots of attention to details from the organizers: they accompanied 🚘 journalists in Tashkent, taking me on tour of the city by car. I'm staying in a newly-built boutique hotel 🏘 in Samarkand, which looks like a museum, with local crafts 🗿and 200-year-old carpets on display in the hallways. Now I'm about to go on a city tour in Samarkand, to hopefully take a sneak peek behind the facade of the SCO venue, where 🇷🇺 Russia's Vladimir Putin, 🇨🇳 China's Xi Jinping and other world leaders will meet on Thursday and Friday.
