🚧Rescuers searched Wednesday for someone missing in a mudslide that swept boulders down fire-scarred slopes. The blaze damaged or destroyed 30 homes in the Southern California mountains as firefighters in the northern part of the state tried to contain an explosive week-old blaze.

Dogs aided in the hunt for a missing person in a heavily damaged area of the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles. Thunderstorms unleashed rocks, trees, and earth that washed away cars, buried homes, and affected 3,000 residents of two remote communities.

The force of mud barreling down the mountain late Monday drove a dumpster through the walls of the Oak Glen Steakhouse and Saloon. A massive tree became lodged in the dining room, muck was waist-deep in the kitchen, and wine bottles were slathered in mud.

🇲🇽A Mexican army general has been detained in connection with the disappearance of 43 students in 2014. The government said Thursday. The general, who commanded a battalion in the area of southern Mexico where the incident occurred, is one of three suspects detained, Deputy Security Minister Ricardo Mejia told reporters.

Prosecutors announced last month that arrest warrants had been issued for more than 80 suspects in the case, including 20 military personnel, 44 police officers, and 14 cartel members.

The same day, former attorney general Jesus Murillo Karam, who led a controversial investigation into the mass disappearance, was detained on charges of forced disappearance, torture, and obstruction of justice. The case is one of the worst human rights tragedies in Mexico, where a spiral of drug-related violence has left more than 100,000 people missing.

🏀Famed US basketball player Michael Jordan’s Game 1 jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals has been sold at auction for $10.1m – a record for any game-worn sports memorabilia - auction house Sotheby’s has announced.

The red, number-23 jersey from Jordan’s “Last Dance” season with the Chicago Bulls fetched 20 separate bids, Sotheby’s said in a statement on Thursday, which drove the price to double its $5m estimate.

“The historic jersey was worn during the most celebrated season of Jordan’s legendary and storied career when the superstar cemented his legacy as the greatest basketball player of all time,” Sotheby’s said.

☀️🌧🌊🌫An international team of climate scientists at the World Weather Attribution group said that rainfall in the worst-hit Pakistan regions had increased as much as 75 percent in recent decades and concluded that manmade activity likely boosted record levels of August precipitation in Sindh and Balochistan provinces.

The flooding affected over 33 million people, destroyed 1.7 million homes, and killed nearly 1,400 people.

To determine what role global heating played in the downpours, the scientists analyzed weather data and computer simulations of today's climate to determine the likelihood of such an event occurring at the roughly 1.2 degrees Celsius of warming that human activity has caused since the Industrial era.

▪️A senior federal judge with experience handling US national security matters was named Thursday as an independent arbiter to vet records seized by the FBI from former president Donald Trump’s Florida estate in an ongoing criminal investigation.

Senior US District Judge Raymond Dearie, based in Brooklyn, was appointed by Florida-based US District Judge Aileen Cannon as a special master in the case.

Dearie, 78, is tasked with deciding whether any documents are privileged –due to attorney-client confidentiality or through a legal principle called executive privilege – and should be off limits to federal investigators. Trump is under investigation by the Justice Department for retaining government records – some of which were marked as highly classified, including “top secret” – at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach after leaving office in January 2021.

🔎Hundreds of thousands of dollars have poured into a fundraising site for a human trafficking victim convicted of killing the man she said repeatedly raped her.

A GoFundMe fundraiser created to support 17-year-old Pieper Lewis raised more than $405,000 from about 10,500 donations on Thursday afternoon.

Lewis pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and willful injury for stabbing to death Zachary Brooks, 37, who she says raped her multiple times in 2020 when she was 15.

During a sentencing hearing Tuesday, she received five years of probation and a deferred judgment, meaning her record could be expunged if she meets the conditions of her sentence.

😗California Gov. Gavin Newsom wants voters to reject a new tax on rich people that would pay for more electric vehicles in the nation’s most populous state, warning in a new statewide TV ad that a measure on the ballot this November won’t help the environment but is instead “one company’s cynical scheme to grab a huge taxpayer subsidy.”

Proposition 30 would raise taxes on people who make more than $2 million annually. It would generate up to $5 billion in new tax money each year, and most of that money would go to programs that help people buy electric cars and install charging stations. A smaller amount would go to wildfire prevention response and prevention programs.
