As the US President Joe Biden who addressed the UN GA has accused Russia of violating the UN charter by launching a special military operation in Ukraine, some experts point at the fact that America itself does not practice what it preaches when it comes to International law. I spoke with Christopher C. Black, international criminal lawyer with 20 years of experience in war crimes and international relations, and a commentator on international affairs, who says that the US is the "prime criminal and violator" of the UN charter.

Russia's top diplomat Sergey Lavrov has a busy schedule at the UN headquarters. Can't help but notice that he knows many delegation members, even from smaller countries, by first name - exactly the case when he greeted guests from Central African Republic today before speaking with the country's President.

🇺🇳 Urgent action needed for food security
Leaders from Europe, the Americas and Africa called Tuesday for urgent action and funding to ease a growing global food security crisis that has been exacerbated by Ukraine conflict and, thanks to climate change, threatens to get worse in coming years.
Last week, the UN food chief warned the world is facing “a global emergency of unprecedented magnitude,” with up to 345 million people marching toward starvation.
David Beasley, executive director of the UN World Food Program, told the UN Security Council that the number is 2½ times the number of acutely food-insecure people before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, and that there is a real risk of “multiple famines” this year.

At least 250,000 people lined up to see queen's coffin
Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan said they estimated that about a quarter-million people joined the longest queue most have ever seen for a chance to file past the queen's coffin from Sept. 14 until shortly before her state funeral on Monday.
Many in the queue waited for up to 13 hours, spending entire nights shuffling for thousands to pay their respects. The London Ambulance Service said staff and volunteers cared for around 2,000 people who lined up, and took 240 in for hospital treatment.
More than 26 million people in the UK watched the queen's funeral service on television, provisional figures show, making the event one of the country's biggest-ever TV audiences. That compares to about 32.1 million viewers who watched Princess Diana's funeral in 1997.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro calls for negotiations
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Tuesday repeated his willingness to foster negotiations to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, calling for a ceasefire but renouncing sanctions and economic isolation.
The Brazilian president noted how some countries that were once leaders in low carbon emissions had now turned to more polluting sources of energy.
Bolsonaro also took a dig at his main rival, former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who leads all polls to return to the presidency he held between 2003 and 2010. Bolsonaro pointed to da Silva’s convictions

⛽️ Germany nationalizes country’s biggest gas importer Uniper
The German government said Wednesday that it has agreed to nationalize the country’s biggest natural gas importer, Uniper, expanding state intervention in the industry to prevent an energy shortage resulting from Russia’s conflict. The network regulator already was put in charge of Gazprom’s former German subsidiary in April.
The deal with Uniper builds on a rescue package agreed to in July and features a capital increase of 8 billion euros that Germany will finance. As part of the agreement, the government will gain a 99% stake in the energy supplier, which until now was controlled by Finland-based Fortum. The Finnish government has the largest stake in Fortum.
Uniper supplies about 40% of all gas customers in Germany, and bought about half of its gas from Russia.

‼️ Without sanctions, Europe's economy would recover, avoid recession - Orban
If sanctions are lifted from Russia, prices and inflation will immediately drop in Europe, the European economy could recover and avoid a recession, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said.
"If the sanctions were lifted, prices would immediately fall by half, inflation would also drop. Without sanctions, the European economy would recover and could avoid an impending recession," Magyar Nemzet quoted Orban as saying at a meeting of the ruling coalition of the Fidesz party and Christian Democratic People's Party.

🔬 Scientists develop mask that can detect Covid in 10 minutes
The highly-sensitive face covering can detect the novel bug in the air and alert the wearer via an app on their phone. It can also pick up swine flu and bird flu. Sensors attached to the mask can respond to as little as 0.3 microliters of viruses in the air, detecting the COVID-19, H5N1 and H1N1 influenza viruses in the air within 10 minutes and send notifications to a device.
The study, led by six scientists working with Tongji University in Shanghai, was published in the scientific journal Matter on Monday. Sensors responded to liquid about 70 to 560 times less than the amount produced in a sneeze, sending alerts to wireless devices like phones.

🔋 Midwestern partnership backs hydrogen as clean energy source
Seven Midwestern states are teaming up to accelerate the development of hydrogen as a clean-energy alternative for automobiles and factories that rely largely on climate-warming fossil fuels, governors said Monday.
The partnership includes Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin, whose economies are dominated by agriculture and heavy industry such as steel and automobile manufacturing.
The federal infrastructure law enacted last year included $8 billion for the US Department of Energy to fund regional “hubs” that would step up clean hydrogen production and distribution. Climate legislation that President Joe Biden signed last month offers a tax credit intended to make clean hydrogen more competitive.

🚀 Space station gets 3 new residents after Russian launch
The International Space Station welcomed three new residents Wednesday following a smooth Russian launch. The Soyuz capsule rocketed into orbit from Kazakhstan and, just three hours later, pulled up at the space station. American Frank Rubio checked in for a six-month stay along with Russians Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin.
NASA astronauts routinely launched on Russian Soyuz rockets — for tens of millions of dollars apiece — until SpaceX started flying station crews from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in 2020. A Russian last launched from Florida 20 years ago. NASA and the Russian Space Agency want to keep exchanging seats like this to ensure a constant US and Russian presence at the space station.

🏛 US House passes election bill spurred by Jan. 6
The US House of Representatives passed a bill to overhaul Congress' certification process for presidential elections on Wednesday, a crucial step as Democrats hope to prevent the kind of chaos from Jan. 6, 2021, when rioters tried to subvert Joe Biden's victory. The Senate is considering its own legislation to reform the Electoral Count Act, with a panel set to debate and possibly modify its version on Tuesday.
The Presidential Election Reform Act would clearly reaffirm that the vice president has no role in validating a presidential election beyond acting as a figurehead who oversees the counting process, barring that person from changing the results. It also would expand the threshold necessary for members of both chambers to object to a state’s results, as well as clarify the role governors play in the process. Finally, it would make clear that state legislatures can’t change election rules retroactively to alter the results.
