🚨 JUST IN: Hurricane Ian makes landfall in Florida as ‘extremely dangerous' category 4 storm - NHC
Hurricane Ian made landfall as a Category 4 storm just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday, with winds topping 155 miles per hour, the US National Hurricane Center has confirmed. The eye of the storm is sitting about 20 miles from Fort Myers, Florida, which has already seen strong winds and heavy storm surges.
Even with the efforts of power companies and municipal employees, who have been working around the clock to restore outages, upwards of 540,000 people have already been left without power as the storm makes its way through Florida’s western coast. This number is expected to increase as the category 4 hurricane continues to pass through southern Florida.

🔋 Biden to oil industry: Don’t raise prices due to hurricane
President Joe Biden on Wednesday warned oil and gas companies against increasing prices for consumers as Hurricane Ian lashed Florida’s southwest coast. “Do not, let me repeat, do not use this as an excuse to raise gasoline prices or gouge the American people,” Biden said at the start of a conference on hunger in America and just hours before the hurricane made landfall as a massive Category 4 storm.
A 99-day run of falling pump prices nationally ended recently, and the 14-week decline was the longest streak since 2015. AAA put the statewide average at just under $3.40 a gallon, six-tenths of a cent higher than a week ago. The nationwide average price had risen past $5 a gallon — and $6 in California — in June.

🌊 Cuba begins to turn on lights after Ian blacks out island
Cuban officials said they had begun to restore some power Wednesday after Hurricane Ian knocked out electricity to the entire island while devastating some of the country’s most important tobacco farms when it hit the island’s western tip as a major storm.
The Energy and Mines Ministry announced it had restored energy to three regions by activating two large power plants in Felton and Nuevitas and was working to get others back on line.
Tens of thousands of people were evacuated and others fled the area ahead of the arrival of Ian, which caused flooding, damaged houses and toppled trees. State media reported two deaths in the province: a woman killed by a falling wall and another by a collapsed roof.

🇧🇷 Brazil’s Bolsonaro enlists Neymar on campaign stop
President Jair Bolsonaro enlisted the help of soccer star Neymar on a campaign stop Wednesday evening, just four days before the country’s general elections.
Bolsonaro visited a non-profit youth institute set up by Neymar in the city of Praia Grande and took a call from the Paris Saint-Germain player, who thanked the far-right leader and said he was proud of him.
Bolsonaro is largely trailing leftist former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the polls ahead of Sunday’s vote. The Brazilian president arrived at the Neymar Jr. Institute, outside Sao Paulo, after riding a motorcycle alongside supporters. Neymar da Silva Santos, the player’s father and agent, also celebrated Bolsonaro’s visit on his social media channels.

🇯🇵 VP Harris seeks computer chip partners in Japan meetings
Vice President Kamala Harris said the administration was looking for new investments and partnerships as she sat down with Japanese technology executives on Wednesday. The morning meeting on her last full day in Tokyo reflects the administration’s focus on boosting semiconductor manufacturing and expanding the supply chain for critical materials.
With China investing in computer chips of its own, the US is trying to increase its domestic semiconductor manufacturing while also working to solidify its technology relationships with South Korea, Taiwan and Japan.
Much like the United States has done, Japan has set up its own fund to support semiconductor production. Out of $4.3 billion, $3.3 billion is being provided in subsidies for a new factory in Kumamoto, in the country’s southwest.
