Newly recognized species of sloth has "coconut-head"

Maned sloths were thought to be one species, but there appears to be one more species of maned sloth in the world. Recent analysis by the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil has suggested that sloths in the south are a distinct species from those in the north.

The sloths covered with coarse, brown hair - resembling a coconut husk - are now considered to be a newly recognized species.

🌊 Floods trap many in Florida as Ian heads to South Carolina

The destruction began to come into focus a day after Ian made landfall in Florida as one of the strongest hurricanes ever to hit the US. The storm flooded homes on both of the state’s coasts, cut off the only bridge to a barrier island, destroyed a historic waterfront pier and knocked out electricity to 2.67 million Florida homes and businesses. At least one man was confirmed dead.

Sheriffs in southwest Florida said 911 centers were inundated by thousands of stranded callers. More than 800 members of federal urban search-and-rescue teams were also in the area. The National Hurricane Center warned storm surge of 6 feet (1.83 meters) or more was possible from Daytona Beach, Florida, to north of Charleston, South Carolina. Rainfall of up to 8 inches (20.32 centimeters) threatened flooding in the Carolinas and Virginia.

‼️ Pentagon says won't get ahead of Nord Stream leak probe after reports US jets circled site ➡️ LIVE UPDATES

The United States will not speculate or get ahead of an investigation by European partners of the apparent sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, a Pentagon spokesperson told Sputnik on Thursday in response to reports that US aircraft circled the site of the incident throughout September.

Data from Flightradar24 analyzed by Sputnik showed that US military helicopters earlier this month, prior to the incident, regularly circled for hours around the area where the gas leaks occurred on the Nord Stream pipelines near Bornholm Island.

"We are not going to speculate or get ahead of European efforts to investigate the cause," the spokesperson said. "We stand ready to support European efforts to mitigate potential environmental impact."

🛰 3 Russian cosmonauts return safely from Intl Space Station

The Soyuz MS-21 spacecraft carrying Oleg Artemyev, Denis Matveyev and Sergey Korsakov touched down softly at 4:57 p.m. (1057 GMT) at a designated site in the steppes of Kazakhstan about 150 kilometers (about 90 miles) southeast of the city of Zhezkazgan. They returned safely on Thursday from a mission to the International Space Station.

The trio arrived at the station in March. For Artemyev, the mission marked a third space flight that has brought his total time spent in orbit to 561 days. Matveyev and Korsakov each logged 195 days on their first missions.

Helicopter support teams landed minutes after to recover the crew. After a quick post-flight medical exam, the cosmonauts will be flown to the Star City cosmonaut training center outside Moscow later in the day.
