⚠️Gas leak on Nord Stream 2 stops, pressure stabilizes - Danish Energy Agency

❗There are "more and more signs" that the United States is "responsible" for the sabotage on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, believes ex-Swiss intelligence officer Jacques Baud.
Poland and Ukraine may be the culprits as well, as countries that vehemently lobbied for the transit of gas through their territories and opposed the pipeline to begin with, the former NATO adviser said on French radio station Courtoisie's program, Ligne Droite.
The United States also made no secret of its vested interest in rupturing all ties between Russia and European countries, Baud added.

🇳🇮🇳🇱 The Netherlands regrets Nicaragua's decision to sever diplomatic relations and will discuss further steps with the European Union, Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra said
"The Netherlands regrets the disproportionate decision by Nicaragua to break off diplomatic relations. We take a firm stand on the worsening democratic structures and human rights violations in Nicaragua. But a critical discussion is always better than ending relations," Hoekstra wrote on Twitter.
On Friday, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega condemned the Netherlands' alleged interference in his country's affairs and said that he did not want to maintain relations with "this interventionist government." This happened after Dutch Ambassador to Central America Christine Pirenne visited the Nicaraguan capital of Managua and spoke with local residents "as if Nicaragua were a Dutch colony," as described by the Nicaraguan president.

The United States sees no evidence suggesting that Russia has decided to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Saturday.
▪️"I don't see anything right now that would lead me to believe that he [Russian President Vladimir Putin] has made such a decision," Austin said.
▪️The Pentagon chief said that Washington had previously communicated these concerns to Moscow via top-level channels.
▪️Earlier this week, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia does not want to develop the theme of nuclear escalation and is urging everyone to behave responsibly

⚡️ African Union chief condemns Burkina Faso coup
🇧🇫🇫🇷 The French foreign ministry has denied the country's involvement in the events taking place after a military takeover in Burkina Faso amid allegations that the deposed leader Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba sought refuge in a French military base.
"France officially denies any involvement in the events that have been taking place since yesterday in Burkina Faso. The base where French forces are located has never hosted Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, nor has our embassy," the statement said.
On Friday night, media in Burkina Faso reported that Damiba, the leader of an interim government who himself came to power through a coup in January, was ousted by a group of military led by Capt. Ibrahim Traore in what is already the second military takeover in the country in eight months. Traore's group suspended the constitution and closed the borders. It also said that Damiba is hiding at a French military base and is plotting a "counteroffensive."

🏚 Ian shows the risks and costs of living on barrier islands
Hurricane Ian underscores the vulnerability of the nation’s barrier islands and the increasing costs of people living on the thin strips of land that parallel the coast. As hurricanes become more destructive, experts question whether such exposed communities can keep rebuilding in the face of climate change.
After devastating parts of Florida, Ian made landfall again in South Carolina, where Pawleys Island was among the hardest hit places. Friday’s winds and rains broke apart the barrier island’s main pier, one of several in the state to crumble and wash away.
Barrier islands were never an ideal place for development, experts say. They typically form as waves deposit sediment off the mainland. And they move based on weather patterns and other ocean forces. Some even disappear.

🔥 Worst Brazil forest fires in a decade
Satellite sensors detected over 42,000 fires in 30 days according to Brazil’s national space institute. It is the first time since 2010 that fires in the Amazon surpassed 40,000 in a single month. In just those three weeks, the Amazon lost 1,120 square kilometers of rainforest (434 square miles), an area larger than New York City.
The surge in forest fire occurs amid a polarizing presidential campaign. Right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro is seeking a second four-year term against leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who ruled Brazil between 2003 and 2010 and leads in the polls. The first round of the election is on Sunday.
Despite the smoke clogging the air of entire Amazon cities, state elections have largely ignored environmental issues. Besides the president, Brazilians will also elect governors and state and national parliaments.

📡 India launches 5G services, Modi calls it step in new era
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services in India on Saturday, calling it a “step towards the new era.” The launch in select cities will cover the entire country over the next couple of years, a government statement said.
The government said that the cumulative economic impact of 5G on India is expected to reach $450 billion by 2035. Research agency OMDIA projects that with 369 million 5G subnoscriptions — over half the total global 5G subnoscriptions currently — India will be just behind China and the US in world rankings by 2026. India would have ousted Japan from the third spot with 147 million customers, according to Business Standard newspaper.

📉 US Army misses recruiting goal
The Army fell about 15,000 soldiers — or 25% — short of its recruitment goal this year, officials confirmed, despite a frantic effort to make up the widely expected gap in a year when all the military services struggled in a tight jobs market to find young people willing and fit to enlist.
Military leaders used increased enlistment bonuses and other programs to try and build their numbers this year, but they say it’s getting more and more difficult to compete with private industry in the tight labor market. So far, the Army has discharged a bit more than 1,700 soldiers for refusing to take the mandated vaccine.
Exacerbating the problem is the fact that according to estimates, just 23% of young people can meet the military’s fitness, educational and moral requirements — with many disqualified for reasons ranging from medical issues to criminal records and tattoos.

🇻🇪/🇺🇸 Venezuela frees seven Americans as part of the largest prisoner swap under Biden
Venezuela on Saturday freed seven Americans, including five oil executives, in exchange for two relatives of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro jailed in the United States on drug convictions, US officials said.
The swap included executives of Citgo Petroleum held for years, in addition to US Marine veteran Matthew Heath and another US citizen named Osman Khan. They were exchanged for two of Maduro's wife's nephews, who were arrested in 2015.
Maduro's government said in a statement that as a result of talks that started in March two young Venezuelans "unjustly" held in the United States were freed, as well as a group of US citizens who were subject to Venezuelan court proceedings and were released for "humanitarian reasons."
