🇬🇧 Shaken UK Conservatives seek unity after Truss’ rocky start
Cabinet minister Nadhim Zahawi told the BBC that with two years or less until the next general election, the party should “get behind Liz because division will cause delay, delay is our enemy, and ultimately (means) defeat.”
A misfiring economic plan that sparked turmoil on financial markets marred Truss’ tumultuous first month in office and threw her party into disarray. 45 billion pounds ($50 billion) in tax cuts, to be funded by government borrowing – spooked financial markets and sent the pound plunging to a record low against the dollar. The Bank of England was forced to intervene to prop up the bond market and stop a wider economic crisis.
Truss also faces a growing Conservative rebellion over reported plans to weaken planning rules and environmental protections as part of her push to get the economy growing.

🗣 Biden preaches patience to voters spooked by economic tumult
Speaking at a Volvo drivetrain factory in Hagerstown, Maryland, Biden tried to make the case once more that lots more factory jobs were on the horizon. In the long term, the economy built on a firmer foundation. We still have a lot of work to do. We’re building a different economy than before, a better one, a stronger one.”
The $25 trillion-plus economy is veering in radically different directions. Growth has fallen for two straight quarters, raising the specter of recession.
Nonetheless, the latest jobs report sent stocks plummeting Friday on renewed worries that the Federal Reserve will have to continue aggressive interest rate increases to temper rising consumer prices. A September poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found just 38% of those surveyed approve of Biden’s economic leadership.

📺 CNN apologizes for entering Thai massacre site
CNN pulled a story on the massacre of Thai preschoolers and apologized Sunday over criticism its journalists entered the day care where the children were slain and filmed the crime scene without permission.
The two CNN journalists involved were fined after authorities found that they had been working in the country after entering on tourist visas, but cleared of wrongdoing for entering the day care center where more than 20 children were killed, deputy national police chief Surachate Hakparn said.
They each agreed to pay fines of 5,000 baht ($133) and leave the country, he said. Both journalists apologized, as did CNN International’s executive vice president and general manager Mike McCarthy. The Thai Journalists’ Association criticized CNN’s actions as “unethical” and “insensitive,” and called for an internal company investigation of the incident in addition to the official Thai probe.

🌱 North Carolina Gov. Pushes For Marijuana Decriminalization
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D.)established a task force following the George Floyd riots in 2020 that recommended that state legislators replace the misdemeanor with a civil offense “akin to a traffic infraction,” but the Republican-led legislature ignored the recommendation a the time.
A bill that would have legalized marijuana for medical use was passed in the state Senate earlier this year, some lawmakers were leery of any form of legalization, warning that the bill was unclear about whether the health benefits outweighed potential health risks.
Marijuana is currently legal in 19 states, Washington, DC, and Guam despite remaining illegal at the federal level. Current N.C.law lists possession of more than 0.5 ounces as punishable by up to $1,000 in fines.
