🔎 Onur Sinan Güzaltan, a political scientist and employee at RUDN University in Moscow, believes that at the moment, Ukraine is not capable of winning the conflict with Russia that was provoked by the US.

"Therefore, such steps are being taken as attacks on the Nord Stream, assassination of Daria Dugina, a strike on the Crimean Bridge," he says.

Russia and Turkey have established good ties in the field of energy, so Ukraine and the forces that support it have set their sights on TurkStream, as happened with Nord Stream, the political scientist believes.

Vladimir Putin earlier in the day mentioned that Ukraine had tried to blow up TurkStream, a natural gas pipeline running from Russia to Turkey.

💧 Rain-fueled landslide sweeps through Venezuela town; 22 dead

A landslide fueled by flooding and days of torrential rain swept through a town in central Venezuela, leaving at least 22 people dead as it dragged mud, rocks and trees through neighborhoods. Dozens of people are missing.

Aragua Gov. Karina Carpio said the flood waters “terribly affected” 21 sectors in Las Tejerías, capital of the Santos Michelena municipality, which has some 54,000 inhabitants.

During the past week, torrential rains have caused flooding in 11 of Venezuela’s 23 states. President Nicolás Maduro said 20.000 officials, including rescuers and members of security forces, have been deployed to affected regions.

🇺🇳 UN ponders rapid armed force to help end Haiti’s crisis

UN Secretary-General António Guterres submitted a letter to the Security Council proposing the immediate activation of a rapid action force following a plea for help from Haiti as gangs and protesters paralyze the country.

The request comes nearly a month after one of Haiti’s most powerful gangs surrounded a key fuel terminal in the capital of Port-au-Prince, preventing the distribution of some 10 million gallons of diesel and gasoline and more than 800,000 gallons of kerosene stored on site.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators also have blocked streets in Port-au-Prince and other major cities, preventing the flow of traffic as part of an ongoing protest against a spike in the prices of gasoline, diesel and kerosene. Gas stations and schools are closed, while banks and grocery stores are operating on a limited schedule.

🇰🇵 NKorea confirms simulated use of nukes to ‘wipe out’ enemies

North Korea’s recent barrage of missile launches were the simulated use of its tactical battlefield nuclear weapons to “hit and wipe out” potential South Korean and US targets, state media reported Monday, as its leader Kim Jong Un signaled he would conduct more provocative tests.

KCNA said the missile tests were in response to recent naval drills between US and South Korean forces, which involved the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan for the first time in five years.

Viewing the drills as a military threat, North Korea decided to stage “the simulation of an actual war” to check and improve its war deterrence and send a warning to its enemies, KCNA said.

🇬🇹 13 dead as Julia drenches Central America with rainfall

Now a tropical depression, former Hurricane Julia drenched Guatemala and El Salvador with torrential rains Monday after it reemerged in the Pacific following a pounding of Nicaragua. Thirteen people were reported dead as a direct or indirect result of the storm.

Julia hit Nicaragua’s central Caribbean coast early Sunday as a hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph) and survived the passage over the country’s mountainous terrain, entering the Pacific late in the day as a tropical storm. By Monday, Julia had moved inland over Guatemala and its winds were down to 35 mph (60 kph).

In Nicaragua, Vice President Rosario Murillo told TN8 television that 9,500 people had been evacuated to shelters. Heavy rains and evacuations were also reported in Panama, Honduras and Costa Rica, where some highways were closed due to the downpours.

🇸🇦 Key Senate chair urges US to freeze cooperation with Saudis

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez called Monday for freezing all U.S. cooperation with Saudi Arabia, delivering one of the strongest expressions yet of U.S. anger over Saudi oil-production cuts that serve to boost Russia.

In a statement, Menendez specifically called for cutting off all arms sales and security cooperation — one of the underpinnings of the more than 70-year US strategic partnership with the oil kingdom — beyond the minimum necessary to defend Americans and American interests.

The Democrats accuse Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom’s de facto ruler, of effectively flouting the Saudi side of a decades-long bargain that has consisted of the US military and defense industry providing security for Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Arabia in turn providing world markets with a reliable flow of oil.

🇺🇸 Small business group files suit over Biden student loan plan

The suit, filed Monday by the Job Creators Network Foundation, argues the Biden administration violated federal procedures by failing to seek public input on the program. The group had argued that Biden’s order unlawfully circumvented Congress’ power over spending and said the plan was discriminatory because it sought to give particular help to borrowers of color.

Elaine Parker, president of Job Creators Network Foundation, slammed the program as executive overreach and complained that it does nothing to address the root cause of rising debt: the “outrageous increase in college tuition that outpaces inflation every single year.”

Six Republican-led states filed suit late last month, accusing the Biden administration of overstepping its executive powers, because the administration tries to push forward with its plan to cancel billions in debt before November’s midterm elections.
