💬 Jim Kavanagh, an editor of thepolemicist.net, discusses EU Foreign Affairs representative Josep Borrel’s recent racist commentary: "This little bit that he gave out, which exposes the kind of exceptionalism and supremacism of the European Union and of European social democrats, as well as right-wingers. There's a jungle out there and there's so many things you can’t get into at this point. You know, they're breeding like bunnies and they're going to come here and jump over the walls, and so we got to do something about it. You know, it's really about, as you say, blatant racism of a certain kind, but it's the self-conception of, you know, “Fortress Europe” and “Garden Europe,” “civilized” Europe. But what's really interesting, as you say, is that this is demonstrating that the EU, which is supposed to be an economic and social union, is really an adjunct of NATO. Behind the scenes NATO's going to control what the EU does."

🎅 Turkish researchers claim they have found the exact location of the real-life Santa Claus’ grave.
Saint Nicholas, the real-life figure who inspired Santa Claus, was long believed to be buried in Turkey’s Antalya province. But now a group of researchers from southern Turkey has gathered enough clues to determine the exact location of where St. Nick’s body was laid to rest.
The alleged final resting place is located in the remnants of an ancient sanctuary in the coastal town of Demre.
“This is an extremely important discovery, the first find from that period,” Osman Eravşar, chairman of the Antalya Cultural Heritage Preservation Regional Board, said. “Now we have reached the remains of the first church and the floor on which Saint Nicholas stepped,” he explained.

🇬🇧 UK inflation accelerates to 40-year high as food prices rise
Food prices jumped 14.6% in the year through September, the Office for National Statistics said Wednesday. That pushed consumer price inflation back to 10.1%, the highest since early 1982 and equal to the level last reached in July.
The figures immediately fueled demands that the government do more to help families and retirees as it struggles to regain credibility after an ill-fated package of tax cuts roiled financial markets. Treasury chief Jeremy Hunt ditched the package after he took office last week, but he has warned that this will be a difficult winter and spending reductions also will be needed.
The European Central Bank at its meeting next week is expected to make another big increase to curtail record inflation in the 19 countries that use the euro currency. The EU’s statistics agency, on Wednesday adjusted eurozone inflation for September down slightly to 9.9%.

✈️ Spirit Airlines shareholders approve $3.8B sale to JetBlue
Spirit Airlines shareholders voted Wednesday to accept a $3.8 billion buyout from JetBlue Airways, but the deal could still face a challenge from federal antitrust regulators. JetBlue emerged as the winner in a bidding war with Frontier to acquire Spirit, the nation’s biggest budget airline.
The deal would make New York-based JetBlue the nation’s fifth-biggest airline with more than 450 planes and about 7,000 pilots and — it hopes — help it win customers from the bigger airlines.
If regulators kill the sale, JetBlue would pay $70 million to Spirit, which is based in Miramar, Florida, and $400 million to Spirit shareholders.

🚙 BMW investing $1.7B in S Carolina as automaker shifts to EVs
BMW will invest $1 billion in its sprawling factory near Spartanburg, South Carolina, to start producing electric vehicles and an additional $700 million to build a electric-battery plant nearby.
The German automaker’s announcement Wednesday reflects its commitment to transitioning to electric-vehicle production in North America, in line with similarly ambitious plans by other major automakers.
The investment in the 7-million-square-foot vehicle factory, would add an unspecified number of jobs to the more than 11,000 workers there. The battery plant, to be built in nearby Woodruff, will employ 300, the company said, with hiring to begin within a few years. In addition, BMW said it has signed a deal with Envision AESC of Japan to supply battery cells for a new class of at least six electric SUVs that will be built at the plant in Greer by 2030.

💉 Cancer vaccine may be ready by 2030
Professor Ozlem Tureci and her husband, professor Ugur Sahin, with whom she cofounded the German pharmaceutical company BioNTech, said in an interview that they thought cancer vaccines could be widely available "before 2030."
The husband-and-wife duo founded BioNTech in 2008 originally to develop and produce treatments for individualized cancer immunotherapy, using mRNA technology. But when the pandemic hit, they adapted this technology to create one of the first and most effective COVID-19 vaccines with Pfizer.
In this recent interview, the two professors explained that their experience of developing the COVID vaccine could help accelerate their work on a cancer vaccine as it launched the mRNA technology into the mainstream. Many other pharmaceutical companies, including vaccine-maker Moderna, are also working on mRNA vaccines to target specific cancers.

🦠 Florida sees rise in flesh-eating bacteria amid Ian concerns
Florida has seen an increase in cases of flesh-eating bacteria this year driven largely by a surge in the county hit hardest by Hurricane Ian. The state Department of Health reports that as of Friday there have been 65 cases of vibrio vulnificus infections and 11 deaths in Florida this year. That compares with 34 cases and 10 deaths reported during all of 2021.
In Lee County, where Ian stormed ashore last month, the health department reports 29 cases this year and four deaths. The advisory said that people with open wounds, cuts, or scratches can be exposed to the bacteria through contact with sea water or brackish water. People with open wounds should avoid such water and seek medical care immediately if an infection is apparent.
