🇺🇸Americans' assessment of Joe Biden's presidency is still more negative than positive, something that has been observed for more than a year.

The approval rating of Joe Biden among Americans has again dropped to below 40%, according to a fresh survey.

In addition to inflation and rising prices, issues such as abortion and Ukraine aid are influencing how Americans evaluate Biden's presidency.

🇺🇸 The US Department of Defense released its 2022 National Defense Strategy on Thursday. Here’s the important bit:
▪️China is listed as “the most consequential and systemic challenge” and a “multi-domain” threat to the US.
▪️Russia is listed as an “acute threat” to US interests abroad and to the homeland.
▪️The Pentagon is concerned about the “deepening” strategic relationship between Moscow and Beijing.
▪️Climate change and transboundary threats, North Korea, Iran and terrorist groups pose additional challenges which need to be addressed.
▪️State actors threaten the US defense industrial base and mobilization system, GPS and other space-based dual-purpose civilian/military capabilities.
▪️Hypersonic weapons, counterspace weapons, and new missile systems are “complicating escalation dynamics” and creating “new challenges for strategic stability”.
▪️The US wants to negotiate a new arms control framework with Russia after NEW START expires in 2026, and China’s expanded nuclear arsenal must be incorporated in any future agreement, and/or require the Pentagon to make “force adjustments” in its strategic deterrent.

💬 “I just don't think the average family, whether they're living in an urban city like Chicago or New York or somewhere in rural Pennsylvania, Kansas or Missouri or whatever, I don't think that they really want to talk about Ukraine and how important it is that we make sacrifices to defend democracy. And yet Biden thinks that that's a winning issue. But all they see is that, hey, I think that having something to do with how things are getting more expensive, I think that has something to do with gas prices going up. I think that I'm not getting any relief and you're fighting this war and you're continuing to send money over to Ukraine. And I just feel like I'm being left behind. I think that that's something that Democrats have decided they're not going to address, and it's a problem for them,” says Kevin Gosztola, a journalist and writer for Shadowproof.

🗣 Musk doesn’t seek a ‘free-for-all hellscape’ for Twitter

Elon Musk attempted to soothe leery Twitter advertisers Thursday, a day before a deadline to close out on his $44 billion acquisition of the social media platform, saying that he is buying the platform to help humanity and doesn’t want it to become a “free-for-all hellscape.”

The message appears aimed at addressing concerns among advertisers — Twitter’s chief source of revenue — that Musk’s plans to promote free speech by cutting back on moderating content will open the floodgates to more online toxicity and drive away users.

Musk’s apparent enthusiasm about visiting Twitter headquarters this week stood in sharp contrast to one of his earlier suggestions: The building should be turned into a homeless shelter because so few employees actually worked there.

🔥 Europe’s energy crisis raises firewood prices, theft fears

Europe’s energy crisis, has forced some people to turn to cheaper heating sources like firewood as the weather gets colder.  In the former Soviet republic of Moldova, leaders worry that this winter could be devastating for many of its people because of the high cost of electricity and heat, with European natural gas prices roughly triple what they were in early 2021.

In Poland, demand for small firewood from state forests grew 46% and larger firewood was up 42% through the end of August from a year earlier. Germany’s statistics agency says prices for firewood and wood pellets made from sawdust that can be used in central home heating rose over 85% in August from a year earlier.

In Denmark, the demand for wood-burning stoves is growing along with firewood itself. The Danish sales site DBA said searches for wood pellets have exploded by over 1,300% in the past year.

🚙 Hyundai breaks ground on $5.5B electric car plant in Georgia

Just five months after Hyundai announced the $5.5 billion manufacturing plant in Bryan County west of Savannah, vast areas of the site have already been cleared of trees. Euisun Chung, executive chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, said the plant will be the envy of the industry.

The South Korean company plans to open the factory in 2025, with at least 8,100 employees producing up to 300,000 electric vehicles per year. Georgia officials say it’s the largest economic development project the state has ever seen.

State and local officials lured Hyundai to Georgia with a $1.8 billion package of tax breaks and incentives. The White House recently announced $2.8 billion in grants to ramp up production of EV batteries in 12 states.

‼️ IAEA Wants to See Protection Zone Around Zaporozhye NPP As Soon As Possible - Chief

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would like to see a protection zone around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant as soon as possible, the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told reporters.

"I remain extremely concerned. I think we have come to a point where everybody agrees that there must be a protection zone. We are discussing about the parameters but this discussion is taking far too long. We should have concluded already. We should have established a protection zone," Grossi said on Thursday. "But we are making progress."

🇸🇦 Saudi oil giant Aramco unveils $1.5B sustainability fund

Saudi oil and gas company Aramco unveiled a $1.5 billion fund on Wednesday for sustainable investments, part of efforts to burnish the state-owned company’s green credentials in an announcement ahead of the UN climate conference next month in Egypt. Aramco has committed to reaching net zero operational emissions by 2050.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been trying to diversify the economy away from oil revenue, though the government continues to rely heavily on crude exports.

The UN climate conference, known as COP27, will hold negotiations aimed at limiting global temperature increases next month in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
