In an interview with Sputnik, Princy Mthombeni, nuclear activist, head and founder of the platform Africa4Nuclear, says that the peaceful atom is key to Africa's industrial development – and, subsequently, solving social and economic problems.
🗣 "I believe that industrialization starts – our development starts – with addressing issues of energy poverty," Mthombeni underlines, adding: "When investors want to come and invest in your country, what they look for first is [...] 'Do you have the guaranteed reliable supply of electricity?.' Then by deploying their nuclear power programs on the African continent we would be able to solve [the energy poverty] issue and therefore lift many people out of poverty."

❗️The head of Taiwan’s administration, Tsai Ing-wen, announced her resignation as leader of the Democratic Progressive Party, citing the party's poor results in local elections, in which voters chose the opposing Kuomintang Party.
▪️The Democratic Progressive Party has traditionally opposed rapprochement with mainland China and sought to expand diplomatic relations with foreign powers, including the United States. Tensions in the Taiwan Strait were dramatically exacerbated after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi paid an official visit to the island in August. Delegations sent to Taiwan by several other countries, including France and Japan, have also done little to improve the situation.
▪️In September, Tsai Ing-wen also said that Taiwan is “proud” of its efforts to help the Kiev regime, with Taipei sending tens of millions of dollars’ worth of assistance to Ukraine, escalating the crisis between Kiev and Moscow, and ramping up exchanges between officials. Formally, Taiwan and Ukraine do not maintain diplomatic relations, with Kiev joining most of the rest of the world in support of the One China Policy in the 1990s.
▪️China-US ties have sunk to their lowest point since the normalization of relations in 1979, with problems stemming from the trade and tech wars launched by the Trump administration in 2018. China has also called out the Biden administration, saying Washington has repeatedly violated the One China Policy on Taiwan.

Top Hungarian Diplomat Slams European Parliament for Politicizing Rule-of-Law Row
The European Commission proposed in September that the Council of the EU freeze 7.5 billion euro ($7.8 billion) in EU budget funding for Hungary, citing corruption, after the EU executive triggered the rule-of-law conditionality mechanism against it in April.
The European Parliament voted 416-124 on Thursday in favor of keeping the freeze on, arguing that 17 remedial actions agreed by Brussels and Budapest were not sufficient to address "the existing risks to the EU’s financial interests," even if implemented fully. The Council has until December 19 to make a decision.

Federation of German Industries Fears Corporate Exodus Due to Energy Сrisis
“The German business model is under enormous stress," CEO of Federation of German Industries (BDI) Tanja Gonner told German media on Saturday, adding that "one in four German companies are thinking of relocating production abroad."
Such sentiments are fueled by soaring prices, disruptions in supply chains, aftershocks of coronavirus-triggered lockdowns in China and the Inflation Reduction Act, a landmark US federal law that unlocks billions of dollars in subsidies for new technologies and sustainable growth of the US economy. BDI views the initiative as a grave risk to Germany's industries.
