Finland Facing Massive EU Fine Over Deforestation, Carbon Sink Collapse

🇫🇮Finland's failure to meet the EU’s net carbon sink target could lead to the Nordic nation being slapped with a hefty fine to the tune of billions of euros, a recent report by its Natural Resource Institute has found.

▪️According to its data, the Finnish land use sector, which is mostly commercial forest, has moved from being a carbon sink to a net source of emissions amid logging and the drying of peatlands. The carbon sink of forests has more than halved as a result of intensifying felling and slowing growth.

▪️Professor Jyri Seppälä, the director of the Center for Sustainable Consumption and Production at the Finnish Environment Institute, minced no words when he called the current situation a “national emergency.”

🚔Police have opened probes into three burglaries at the three power substations in the port city of Tacoma, Washington, which left about 14,000 customers without electricity on Christmas morning.

▪️The Pierce County Sheriff's Department reported that the first incident occurred at a substation on 46th Avenue belonging to Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU), which was attacked at around 5:30 a.m. local time on Sunday.

▪️Nothing was stolen, but equipment was vandalized, which led to outages in the area, according to police.

▪️Later that morning, police responded to a call about a burglary at a TPU on 224th Street, which also saw forced entry and damage to the equipment. Like in the 46th Avenue incident, nothing was taken from the scene.

When speaking about disruptions in the EU energy supply, Baudet added, that in his opinion, based on the hacked SMS “It’s done” allegedly sent by Liz Truss to Anthony Blinken, the US and Britain could be the ones behind the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage:

“It’s quite possible, considering the Americans and the Brits have a stake in destroying the pipeline. Is there a European interest in blowing up that pipeline? No. Is there a Russian interest? No. Why does Germany refuse to answer any questions about the NATO ships coming near Nord Stream before the blast?”

Formed in 2016, the FvD has made a major leap forward during the 2019 NL provincial election. It currently has 1 seat in the EU Parliament, 5 seats in the Dutch Parliament, 1 in the Senate and 24 in the provincial councils.

Malicious Intent Suspected as Finnish Church Burns to Ashes on Christmas

A preliminary investigation has been launched into a fire that completely destroyed a historic wooden church in the municipality of Rautjarvi in the region of South Karelia in southern Finland.

The authorities said they had “reason to suspect” that the blaze that razed the Rautjärvi church was started intentionally, which is why the incident is being looked into as a case of aggravated property damage.

🇧🇷Brazil's incoming Justice Minister Flavio Dino has pledged to reevaluate the procedures for the January 1 inauguration of President­­-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva after an explosive device near capital Brasilia’s international airport was deactivated Saturday.

💬“President Lula's inauguration will take place in peace. All procedures will be reassessed, with a view to strengthening security. And the fight against terrorists and rioters will be intensified. Democracy has won and will win,” Dino tweeted on Monday.

Medvedev Says Russia Will Do Everything to Prevent Third World War, Nuclear Disaster

Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said on Sunday that Russia would do everything to prevent a third World War or nuclear disaster, and that global tensions were likely to continue "indefinitely" until Russia receives necessary security guarantees.

"If we do not receive them [suitable security guarantees], the tension will persist indefinitely. The world will continue to teeter on the brink of a third World War and a nuclear disaster. We will do everything to prevent them," Medvedev said in his article for Russian newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

❗️Russian MoD’s briefing on the progress of the special military operation in Ukraine:

▪️ In the Kharkov region, up to 20 Ukrainian soldiers, an infantry fighting vehicle and two vehicles were destroyed as a result of a concentrated fire strike on the accumulation of troops and equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

▪️ In the DPR, Russian artillery defeated the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine;

▪️ In the LPR, a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group and a mortar crew were destroyed. The losses of the enemy in this direction amounted to more than 30 troops, two armored combat vehicles and two pickup trucks;

▪️ As a result of a strike on the command post of the 80th Airborne Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the city of Kramatorsk, DPR, more than 35 Ukrainian troops, including five senior officers, were killed. The total losses of the enemy per day in this direction amounted to up to 100 military personnel, four infantry fighting vehicles and eight vehicles;
