In 2020, Gates became the largest private farmland owner in the US, accumulating more than 269,000 acres. His farmland, spanning nearly 20 states, is used to cultivate things like carrots, soybeans, and potatoes, with the largest holdings in Louisiana (69,071 acres), Arkansas (47,927 acres), and Nebraska (20,588 acres).

According to the US Department of Agriculture, about 30 percent of farmland in the country is rented out by owners who serve as landlords and aren’t involved in farming, like Gates. Purchases are often made from cash poor farmers who have owned the land for decades.
