📈 The year-on-year crime rate increased dramatically in Washington during the first two months of 2023, with the total number of crimes rising by 25% and homicides surging by 40%, according to data by the Metropolitan Police Department.

📊 In total, over 5,000 crimes have been committed in Washington from the beginning of 2023, while there were slightly more than 4,000 cases in the same period of 2022. Against this background, the number of homicides grew from 25 to 35.

📍 The police data also showed that the number of sexual assaults increased by more than double, from 13 to 29. The number of arson cases from one case to four. Meanwhile, the number of motor vehicle thefts rose more than twice, from 531 to 1,120 cases, and the amount of thefts from autos increased by 24%, from 1,060 to more than 1,300.

Pentagon: Ukraine Conflict Revealed Weakness of US Munitions Production Base

The United States’ involvement in the Ukraine conflict revealed the weaknesses of its defense industrial base’s ability to produce an adequate amount of munitions, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl said on Tuesday.

The US is investing in replenishing its own stocks, Kahl said. The Pentagon is confident that proper investments have been made for contingencies involving Russia, China, North Korea and Iran, Kahl said.

🇷🇸 Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Western officials, in conversations with him, admitted involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.

▪️ Speaking on Serbian TV channel, Vucic said that due to the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, conversations with Western representatives have become more demanding and tough, including on the settlement in Kosovo.

🗣 "I was told: 'We have a war under way in Europe, we are participating, though we don't say it.' And they say that we [Belgrade] will lose a lot or everything unless we behave properly," he said.

▪️Vucic said Western officials announced a possible termination of investment in Serbia, withdrawal of already invested capital, shutdown of enterprises and suspension of its European integration if Belgrade remains intractable.

The number of child suicides in Japan in 2022 is likely to have reached a record high, having exceeded 500 cases for the first time in Japan's history, Japanese broadcaster reported on Tuesday, citing government figures.

▪️ The broadcaster cited the Japanese Health Ministry as saying that 512 students killed themselves in 2022, up 39 incidents compared to the previous year. Poor academic performance, entry exams, and worries about their future were among the main reasons for child suicides in the past year.

▪️ According to the report, among those students who committed suicide last year, 352 were in senior high school (up 38 compared to 2021), 143 were in junior high (down five compared to the past year), and 17 were in elementary school (up six students).

What we know so far about the train collision in Greece:

▪️ A freight train and a passenger train collided in northern Greece, killing at least 32 people and injuring 85 others;

▪️ The tragedy occurred shortly before midnight near Tempe Valley in northern Greece;

▪️ The passenger train was travelling along a route between two major cities popular with tourists and locals alike - Athens and Thessaloniki - when it collided with the cargo train about 255 miles north of Athens;

▪️ The evacuation process is continuing and is being carried out but has been hampered by the severity of the collision between the two trains, according to emergency services.
