🇮🇹About 3,000 undocumented migrants have arrived in Italy via the Mediterranean Sea over the past three days, an Italian broadcaster reported on Tuesday, citing the coast guard.

The previous significant influx of migrants was registered at the end of March, when over 6,500 refugees from Asia and Africa reached the Italian coast within five days, which is equal to the number of migrants recorded in the Apennines in the first three months of 2022. Since the beginning of this year, the migration influx has quadrupled, with almost 30,000 migrants having already arrived in the country.

The Italian island of Lampedusa is now experiencing the most serious aggravation of the migration problem, as up to 1,800 refugees rescued in the Mediterranean Sea remain in its local temporary accommodation center for migrants, initially designed for 400 people. About 400 more people picked up by Italian rescuers currently reside on various ships in the Ionian Sea.

The digital ruble is expected to integrate with existing payment systems and be available for use by individuals and businesses alike.

Global Thunder 23: What Message Do US’ Latest Nuclear Drills Send Russia?

The United States Strategic Command has begun its annual command and control drills, Global Thunder 23, to enhance nuclear readiness and assess operational readiness in coordination with allies. The drills involve US forces responsible for launching nuclear weapons against adversaries and typically include Britain, Canada, Denmark, Australia, and South Korea.

Turkiye in Venezuela: A Sanctioned Partnership

Turkiye has developed a new partnership with Venezuela that aims to help the South American country bypass US sanctions, which have caused a major contraction in its economy since 2014.

Turkish imports from Venezuela have increased by 523% since 2017, and Venezuelan imports from Turkiye have grown by 860% over the same period. The two countries have established consulates in each other’s second cities, and direct flights run on a daily basis. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro have made six presidential visits each in the last six years.

Turkiye has helped Venezuela cover its fiscal deficit by pledging to housing, healthcare, and schooling, with three Maarif international schools now operating in Caracas. Turkiye has also become a major supplier to Venezuela’s subsidized CLAP food scheme, which the government claims reaches 7.5 million families.

EU Cocoa Imports Associated With Deforestation in Ivory Coast

A recent study by researchers from the University of Louvain in Belgium has revealed that unregulated cocoa production in the Ivory Coast was responsible for 45% of the deforestation in the West African country between 2000 and 2019. The report cites untraced sourcing as being responsible for 60% of the deforestation.

The researchers recommend strongly enforced land-use policies and full farm-level traceability in the Ivory Coast, as well as requiring giant chocolate producers in Europe to prove that their products have not contributed to deforestation in the origin countries in Africa. Cocoa production plays a crucial role in the Ivorian economy, contributing significantly to the country's GDP and providing employment for millions of people.
