Russia drops out of Top-100 countries with highest inflation rate

Russia ranked 102nd globally in terms of price surge, with an estimated annual inflation rate of 3.5% in March. The highest inflation rates were recorded in Lebanon (264%), Argentina (104.3%), Zimbabwe (87.6%), Suriname (59.4%), and Turkiye (50.5%).

Rising inflation figures were also observed in other countries like Sri Lanka, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Laos, and Pakistan. In Europe, Hungary, Moldova, and Ukraine had relatively high inflation rates, while China had the lowest inflation rate globally at 0.7%.

The International Monetary Fund projected a decline in global inflation from 8.7% in 2022 to 7% in 2023, with a target inflation level expected to be reached by 2025. This projection is influenced by factors such as declining commodity prices and the effects of monetary tightening on economic activity.

League of Arab States may decide on Syria's return to organization on May 7

"The decision [on Syria's readmission to the LAS] may be made. This matter is under consideration. The decision may be made tomorrow … all members [of the organization] will be taking part in the ministerial meeting," Rushdie said, when asked if the meeting might decide on the restoration of Syria's membership.

On Friday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi told CNN that there were enough votes among Arab League members to bring Syria back into the organization.

The 22-nation Arab League suspended Syria's membership in 2011 after a war broke out in the country. Several member states then recalled their ambassadors from Syria in protest against Syrian President Bashar Assad's policies, accusing his government of cracking down on demonstrators in the country. Years later, some of the nations have begun taking steps to reengage with Damascus and reopen embassies.

Kishinev notifies Kiev of plans to limit imports of Ukrainian grain

"Moldova plans to join the decision of the European Union to impose temporary restrictions on the import of Ukrainian wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflowers, with the provision of transit through our country.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vladimir Bolea has informed his Ukrainian counterpart, Mykola Solskyi, of it," the ministry's statement read.

The amount of local grain in Moldova's storage facilities is high, which puts pressure on farmers, who are concerned there will be no place for the new harvest, Bolea told Solskyi.

Ancient warning for modern day bathers

Archaeologists excavating an ancient Roman bathhouse near Hadrian's Wall in Carlisle, UK, have discovered a collection of 36 engraved gems, known as "intaglios," made of semiprecious stones like amethyst, carnelian, and jasper. These small gems are believed to have fallen out of wealthy visitors' rings while they were bathing in the third-century bathhouse.

The researchers speculate that the water may have caused the adhesives used in the rings to loosen and the metal settings to expand and contract, leading to the loss of the stones. The site has also yielded various other artifacts, suggesting that the owners of the gems were likely women.

Get ready to enjoy shooting stars as Eta Aquariids dazzle sky

People in Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and parts of the Pacific will be able to see the Moon eclipsed by the Earth, darkening the sky and making it easier to spot the meteors.

Be prepared to behold a mesmerizing display of shooting stars tonight as the Earth collides with dust and debris left by Halley’s Comet. The meteor shower, named after the star Eta Aquarii, is predicted to peak overnight on May 5-6 and 6-7, 2023, providing sky-watchers with the chance to witness a flurry of meteors streaking across the night sky.

This year’s meteor shower may be even more spectacular than usual. Scientists predict that the meteor rates could be more than twice the usual number, with up to 60 to 120 shooting stars per hour in each hemisphere, compared to 10 to 30 in normal years.

Halley’s Comet orbits the Sun every 75-79 years and was last seen in 1986.

🇧🇷 Lula da Silva appeals in support of Assange

He expressed his dismay at Assange's four-year confinement in Belmarsh Prison in the UK, stating that it was embarrassing that a journalist who exposed wrongdoing was imprisoned without significant action being taken to free him.

💬 “We talk about freedom of expression; the guy is in prison because he denounced wrongdoing. And the press doesn’t do anything in defense of this journalist. I can’t understand it,” Lula told reporters.

Lula called for a global press movement to defend the right to expose wrongdoing, emphasizing that Assange had not "denounced anything vulgar" but had exposed state surveillance. He criticized the lack of action by the press to secure the journalist's freedom, stating that it was sad but true.
