US Army enhances surveillance capabilities to monitor social media
A recent procurement document reveals that a battalion within the US Army is expanding its surveillance capabilities to detect online threats, gather public information, and track individuals. The emphasis on social media reflects the growing importance of countering disinformation in national security efforts.
However, privacy advocates argue that surveilling individuals based on their expressions of opinions or value judgments, particularly towards public officials, hinders democratic principles that protect the ability to criticize and express sentiment without government interference.
The document highlights the battalion's intention to acquire tools that can detect and locate online threats, including access to platforms like 4Chan, Reddit, YouTube, Vkontakte, Discord, and Telegram.
The battalion aims to combine social media data with other sources such as CCTV feeds, news outlets, personal records, hacked information, webcams, and cellular location data. It also outlines techniques like "geo-fencing" and misattribution to conceal the Army's internet presence and deceive others about its true identity while monitoring online activity.

Republican lawmakers proposed to trim over $2.5 billion earmarked for missile procurement, including munitions for Ukraine, under the Pentagon spending bill
Washington's weapons deliveries to Kiev forced military planners to reconsider munitions procurement schemes to be prepared for another conflict. This realization led the US Department of Defense to ask Congress to fund multi-year purchases of munitions instead of placing orders annually under the proposed budget for fiscal year 2024.
"The Committee is particularly concerned the Department [of Defense] cannot provide realistic cost estimates and has proceeded with these multiyear procurement requests without a firm understanding of each program's unit cost and production capacity," the report said, as quoted by media.
The panel suggests redirecting funds to boost military training, maintenance as well as research and development.
The House Appropriations Committee has budgetary authority and passes appropriations bills together with the Senate. The bills approved by the Appropriations Committee regulate the various funding of the US government.

The West is concerned about the ongoing “uncertainty” over the future of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF)’s counteroffensive against Russian troops
"Nerves are jangling across Europe and the US as Kiev’s international backers wait for evidence that the Ukrainian military can turn the substantial support it has received from NATO into real gains,” Misha Glenny, an observer for The Times, says.
Glenny claimed that “in private, Ukrainian officials admit that their armed forces do not have the capacity to restore Kiev’s sovereignty" across all the land that is currently being controlled by Russia.
“The Russian military has used the winter months to dig in across the entire frontline. The impact of such powerful weapons as Britain’s Storm Shadow cruise missiles [that the UK earlier supplied to Kiev as part of the West’s military aid] remains unknown,” the author pointed out.
He underscored that if Russia wins, it “would represent not just a disaster for Ukraine but a massive setback for the West,” and that China, Moscow’s “most important ally, would be strengthened by a Russian victory.”

Earlier this week Germany unveiled National Security Strategy that dubbed Russia "the greatest threat to peace and security in the Euro-Atlantic region."

Aleksandar Vucic said that he would not negotiate with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti until Pristina releases the detained Serbs
In an address to citizens, the Serbian president recalled that not a single Kosovo Albanian had been injured by Serbs since the beginning of the year, while several Serbs sustained injures from Albanians.
"I believe that it makes absolutely no sense to talk to a person who never wanted to talk, and it doesn't occur to me to talk about incomprehensible things until the Serb detainees are released, and I know they are not going to do that, and until the senseless measures are withdrawn," Vucic said.
On Saturday, Kosovo police detained Serbian health worker Dalibor Spasic in front of his daughter and wife on suspicion of rioting. Later that day, Kosovo police beat and detained two Serbian teens who were hospitalized with injuries from the blows and in a state of shock.

Indonesia is interested in cooperation with Russia in the Arctic region to study climate change
"The Indonesian delegation has visited our pavilion [at a forum] and we discussed possible areas of cooperation … What interest can the southern country have in Arctic research? Everything is simple here. Climate changes in the Arctic are so global that they also affect the southern countries," the director of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Alexander Makarov, told Sputnik on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
The institute's chief said that climate change in the Artic affects the formation of rains and monsoons in Asia, which could pose a risk to agriculture, as the Arctic is a region where the weather conditions for half of the globe are rooted.
Bilateral cooperation could begin with student exchange programs, Makarov noted.

Josep Borrell admitted that disagreements over the restoration of Syria's full membership in the League of Arab States led to the indefinite postponement of the LAS-European Union ministerial meeting
He made the statement during a visit to the Arab League headquarters in Cairo.
"We have been having regular contacts at different levels, including ministerial meetings. The last one took place in February 2019 in Brussels. ... Since then, unfortunately, the meeting has had to be postponed. The last time it was scheduled for this week, and it had to be postponed due to the readmission of Syria on the Arab League," Borrell said.
He added that despite the fact that it is a sovereign decision of the LAS, Brussels cannot agree to it.
"It's a sovereign decision, and we respect it," Borrell said, adding it was taken despite Damascus' alleged "lack of meaningful efforts to resolve the conflict."

Authorities in Singapore have announced that they intend to expand the use of police patrol robots across the city following five years of trials
The "integration of robotics" improves the operational efficiency and capabilities of Singaporean crime-fighting, a high-ranking police official reportedly said.
These 1.7-meter-tall mobile contraptions fitted with cameras and speakers afford additional surveillance capabilities to the police force and can help set up a cordon or warn off bystanders at a scene before officers arrive.
Police robots were first deployed in Singapore in 2018 during the Chingay Parade, and two robots were deployed this April at the Terminal 4 of the Changi Airport as part of the local police force patrol operations, according to media reports.
“The operationalization of patrol robots at Changi Airport Terminal 4 since April represents a significant milestone in our exploration of robotics in policing,” Superintendent Lim Ke Wei of the Airport Police said as quoted by one Singaporean newspaper.“
"These patrol robots operate autonomously alongside our officers, providing additional eyes on the ground," Lim added.

Spin Me Round: Earth’s Spin Shifted Due to Human Groundwater Consumption, Study Says
🌍 Earth spins once roughly every 24 hours at an axial tilt of 23.4°, currently declining in a 41,000-year cycle.
In 2016, it was found that water might alter how the Earth rotated, but up until now, the precise role of groundwater in these rotational shifts had not been studied.
Humans have extracted such a large mass of water from the ground that the Earth tilted nearly 80 centimeters east between 1993 and 2010 alone, according to a new study
