Dodging the bullet? Ukrainians pay up to $10k to avoid connoscription, reports say

Thousands of Ukrainians have paid hefty bribes to “corrupt army recruiters” in order to avoid being drafted as Russia continues its special military operation in Ukraine, a UK newspaper has reported.

According to the newspaper, the cost of bribes differs across Ukraine, with “many draft dodgers […] asked to pay $6,000 for a medical certificate granting them an exemption from military service.”

In this vein, the media outlet mentioned head of the Odessa regional recruitment center Evgeny Borisov, who was arrested in July after he was accused of bagging more than $5 million worth of bribes to approve exemptions.

🇷🇺 Russia's Kalashnikov designs short version of AK-19 rifle for NATO cartridge

The compact version is presented at the company's expo center. It can fire 5.56×45mm rounds, which are adopted as a standard cartridge for rifle weapons in NATO countries.

Kalashnikov designed AK-19, an export variant of the AK-12 assault rifle, which fires NATO cartridges in 2020. In 2021, Russia signed first export contracts for the supplies of these rifles. Last year, the weapon was put into series production.

🚀 Russia's lunar mission Luna-25 transmits first scientific data to Earth, Roscosmos reports

"Today the scientific equipment, developed by the Russian Academy of Sciences' Space Research Institute, was switched on for the first time in the conditions of space flight," Roscosmos said in a statement. The space corporation confirmed that telemetry information from all the devices showed that they are functioning nominally.

The data gathered by the station on its way to the Moon has already been received, and the project's scientific team has begun processing it, according to the statement.

Niger’s chief negotiator Moussa Salau Barma thanked the Guinean government for its assistance and urged it to increase support in light of the challenges faced by the putschists, Guinean broadcaster RTG reported.

Guinea was the first country to back the Nigerien military after it toppled French-backed President Mohamed Bazoum in late July and appointed a transitional government.

🇷🇸 Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Sunday that he will not sign any laws on marriages for same-sex couples or non-binary genders as long as he is the head of state.

"I will not sign a document recognizing any gender other than male and female, or gender fluidity, when a person says they feel male or female at different times," Vucic said on air of Serbian TV.

"As long as I am president, this [legalization of non-binary genders and marriages for same-sex couples] will remain prohibited," Vucic said, adding that Serbian society is traditional.

According to the survey results, only 21% of respondents believe that Scholz gets his way on important political issues. At the same time, 73% note that the chancellor is not inclined to this.

Respondents are also critical of the way the chancellor communicates. According to the poll, 72% consider it fair to say that Scholz, more often than other politicians, does not give specific answers to questions in political interviews. Only 19% believe that this accusation is untrue.

The survey was conducted on August 9-10 by Wahlen. 1061 randomly selected respondents who have the right to vote were polled. The survey is representative of the entire German population.

🇩🇪 Michael Kretschmer, Minister President of the eastern German state of Saxony, warned that Germany risked an escalation by supplying Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles, which can strike into the Russian territory.

"Germany used to have a responsible, smart and balanced foreign and security strategy. Are we really OK with the prospect that German rockets could strike Russia? I am definitely against deliveries of cruise missiles," he said.

Speaking to press, Kretschmer said that the federal government had repeatedly crossed its own "red lines" by supplying Kiev with heavier weapons than was originally planned.

🇫🇷 France has completed the military training of 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers so far this year, which was its goal for 2023, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu said in an interview out Sunday.

"The Ukrainian counteroffensive requires a new generation of soldiers, who need to be trained. In August, we met the goal we set ourselves for the year — to train 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers, split up between France and Poland," he told press.

Lecornu said in July that 5,200 Ukrainians had completed training by France, including 1,600 in Poland. He estimated at the time that 7,000 would be trained by the end of this year.

🇺🇸 Prosecutors in the US state of Georgia claim they have evidence to prove that ex-President Donald Trump’s legal team had a role in the 2021 voting system breach in Coffee County, media reported Sunday.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis will seek charges against more than a dozen people when she presents the case before a grand jury next week, media cited sources as saying. She reportedly has texts and emails implicating several of those people in the computer breach in the rural Georgian county.
