🌐 Activists march against the African Climate Summit in Nairobi

As the African Climate Summit kicked off in Kenya on Monday, hundreds of Friends of the Earth Africa members joined a "people's march" on the streets of Nairobi.

🗺 According to the activists, the continent is being asked to develop in a cleaner way than the world's big polluters, while much of the promised support hasn't materialized.

As in the past, Kenyan President William Ruto has called for an end to the "addiction" to fossil fuels, and some of the marchers carried signs calling for a halt to the use of fossil fuels, such as "Stop the neo-colonial scramble for oil and gas in Africa".

🦠🤔 New COVID Spike: will Americans mask up again?

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nationwide COVID hospitalizations in the most recent week increased by 18.8% while SARS-CoV-2-related deaths surged by more than 21%.

As of yet, the CDC has not made a broad recommendation for everyone to wear masks. However, as per the US press, that could happen if hospitalizations reach "critical levels." Thus the agency recommends "universal masking" in jurisdictions with 20 or more people with COVID per 100,000 in local hospitals; whereas masking for high-risk individuals could be implemented when 10 to 19.9 people per 100,000 are hospitalized with COVID.

What measures have been taken by US states so far? Which States Have Imposed Mask Mandates? Which Politicians Oppose Masking Up?

🇮🇳 ‘Shredding Colonial Heritage’: What Indians Think of Changing Country Name

🗯 “The British changed Bharat's name to India. Under Article 1, the Constitution states: 'India, that is Bharat'. Our country has been known by the name '#Bharat' for thousands of years ... it is this country's ancient name and is found in ancient Sanskrit texts. The name 'India' was given by the colonial Raj and is thus a symbol of slavery. The name India should be removed from the Constitution," #BJP Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Bansal said.

Up to 3.3 million Ukrainians may never return home from abroad, an American media has reported

The news agency refers to the report of the Ukrainian Center for Economic Strategy. Compared with the data of a similar December study, this figure increased by 0.6 million.

Analysts attribute this to the ongoing conflict and attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, as well as people's growing adaptation to life abroad. In addition, the report of the center noted that the potential outflow of the population could lead to a reduction in the country's GDP by 6.9% as early as 2024.

As of the end of June, up to 6.7 million Ukrainians are now abroad.

🇦🇺 Australia 'compromised' by National Bank rule closing accounts for 'speech violations'

A new forthcoming rule by the National Australian Bank (NAB), expected to be implemented in November, would allow the bank to close customers' accounts for a wide range of speech-related offenses. A banking expert said it was an abuse of human rights and "antithetical to democratic values."

The rule change is in keeping with guidance issued by Canberra in June that seeks to bring various government institutions’ functioning in line with national law.

The move has aroused the fury of defenders of free speech, which does not have the same legal foundations as it does in the United States, where speech by and large is legally restricted only by its potential to imminently provoke violent or illegal behavior.
