Exclusive | Israeli-Palestine Escalation Affects Energy of Both Mali and Africa

On October 9, following a major escalation of the conflict with Palestine, Israel ordered a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, thereby cutting off supplies of water, food, and fuel.

Malian Energy and Water Resources Minister Bintou Camara
told Sputnik Africa how the new turn of confrontation between Israel and Palestine impacts the energy industry in Africa.

💬 "This is something that affects all countries. For example, in the energy sector, this affects the cost of hydrocarbons. In our country, as I already said, almost all of our factories now operate on fuel. So, it's very expensive. This is why these types of conflicts affect our economy and especially in the field of energy, both in Mali and in the rest of Africa," she said.

🇵🇸🇮🇱 How Gaza war backfires on Middle East and global economy

Israel's war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip may hit the world's economy if it spirals into a broader conflict, Tom Luongo, financial and geopolitical analyst, told Sputnik.

Market indicators suggest the impact of the Israeli-Hamas conflict has remained contained so far, but the situation may change if Tel Aviv's ground operation in Gaza goes wrong and Iran steps in.

Last Saturday’s surprise attack by Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and other Gaza militants as well as Israel's retaliatory strikes have taken a toll on the economies of the region. The shekel, Israel’s currency, has lost 3% against the US dollar, while the nation's benchmark stock index has slumped 6.4% this week. Bonds issued by Israel's neighbors – Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt – have been hit hard as well.

🇵🇸UNICEF believes displacement in Gaza will provoke a humanitarian crisis

💬 "If implemented, such appeals would cause an extreme complication of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, as there are approximately 1 million people in northern Gaza with nowhere to go and no safe places for them. The UN in all its branches has called for this decision to be abandoned and for humanitarian aid to be allowed into the Gaza Strip for distribution to children, families, civilians," UNICEF Communication Officer Salim Oweis told Sputnik.

All parties to the conflict under international law bear responsibility for the protection of civilians and are obliged to protect the lives and safety of children wherever they are, Oweis said.

UNICEF representatives continue to maintain presence in the Gaza Strip, but it has become increasingly difficult due to the destruction of infrastructure, he said.

🇺🇸 The US needs stronger and more capable leadership in both the White House and Congress to address multiple crises the nation and the world are facing, including the war between Israel and Hamas, the conflict in Ukraine, and the threat of a government shutdown, experts told Sputnik.

The US House has continued to remain without a speaker since Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted last week, which has delayed voting on funds to support Israel and Ukraine and avoid a government shutdown. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has made an alarming number of public gaffes in recent days and weeks, raising concerns whether the leader will be able to effectively handle an increasing number of crises.

🇮🇷 Iran expressed its desire to avoid exacerbating the situation in the Hamas-Israel war but made it clear that it may need to intervene if Israel's military operation in Gaza continues, reports US media quoting diplomatic sources

The situation is of significant international concern as the conflict between Hamas and Israel holds the potential to escalate into a regional war if Iran becomes directly or indirectly involved.
