The US Department of Energy said the purpose of the test was to assess its ability to detect underground nuclear explosions and support efforts to “develop new technologies in support of US nuclear non-proliferation goals”.

The department emphasized that chemical explosives and radioisotope tracers were used to conduct the experiment, which took place in a special underground tunnel. The explosion was monitored by a network of seismic, infrasound, electromagnetic and other sensors.
