🇯🇵 Japan may ‘sacrifice’ its own defense industry interests in favor of US as it cuts costs

A collapse in the yen is forcing Japan to scale back a historic five-year plan costing 43.5 trillion yen ($290Bln).

One of the goals of boosting defense spending was the desire to promote the development of the national defense industry by expanding purchases of products made by Japanese companies for the self-defense forces. However, by all accounts, "this is exactly what the Japanese will have to economize on now," Oleg Paramonov, Senior Researcher of the Institute for International Studies told Sputnik.

Japan will probably sacrifice the interests of its own defense industry in favor of continued purchases of American weapons, said the expert.

"Regardless of what's happening in Ukraine and again, our commiserations and sympathies to Mr. Zelensky, who has fallen off the front pages, nice and shivering in his Kiev office, no one's visiting him anymore. It was a stage where he was as popular or Kiev was as popular destination as Epstein's island for various Western leaders. Not anymore. So, Ukraine is now kind of yesterday's problem. Blinken had pressed Israel to agree to “humanitarian pauses,” but his call was publicly dismissed by Tel Aviv. Representatives of Israel's Arab neighbors in one voice reiterated calls for an “immediate ceasefire” as they faced Blinken in Jordan, urging him to “stop this madness.”

However, wrapping up his diplomatic back-and-forth, the secretary of state doubled down on the US stance that it would not push for a ceasefire.

🇵🇸 Hamas political leadership offered ‘clemency' for hostage release by Israel in secret talks

The fate of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza has prompted Israel to offer an incentive for political leaders of the militant group, US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh wrote on Substack.

“We’re holding out clemency for the Hamas political leadership - giving them a chance to surrender the hostages and cling to life,” a source told the Pulitzer Prize-winner.

Sy Hersh wrote that Yahya Sinwar, who now directs the political wing of Hamas and his colleagues have been told that if they want to survive, they must “release the Israeli hostages and agree to begin holding immediate war-crime tribunals.”

“The thought was that if they agree to try their own people and order them executed, they will be given their lives while also exonerating Israel for the war,” an American official was quoted as saying.

🇺🇸 Biden's waning support among non-whites & progressives may cost him the presidency in 2024

Joe Biden won the support of over 70% of Hispanic and Black Americans in 2020: in particular, exit polls from 2020 demonstrated that Joe led his rival Donald Trump by 87%-12% among African Americans and 65%-32% among Latino voters.

However, a series of surveys carried out over the past year have shown that the US incumbent president's backing among these two groups is on the decline across ages, genders and education-levels, as per Axios. Even though Biden still leads Trump in this respect, his support among non-whites has plummeted by a staggering 33 points since 2020.

The US media has drawn attention to the fact that Black and Hispanic voters were "a key" force during Biden's 2020 presidential race, adding that the eroding support could mean a lower turnout in 2024 and, accordingly, more volatile results.
