Why is Israel facing strategic defeat in Gaza?

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is right when he warns Israel of a "strategic defeat" in Gaza, according to retired US Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski.

"A strategic defeat for Israel in many ways has already occurred as nearly all of her Western allies have had to tamp down on domestic demonstrations and exercise of free speech. Her actions are costing her the faith of the populations she formerly could rely on – and damaging the political parties and politicians in their own countries," Kwiatkowski told Sputnik.

She also noted that Israel also risks alienating its neighbors after all the years of diplomatic efforts to establish good ties and diplomatic relations with Arab and Muslim states.

Gaza will remember: why war is not an answer to Israel-Palestine strife

🗣 While Israel is reportedly gaining ground in the north and south of the Gaza Strip, its victory in the war against Hamas is hardly guaranteed, Mideast veteran journalists Ghadi Francis and Laith Marouf argue.

"They are dreaming of something that will never happen, which is, number one, the defeat of the resistance in Gaza and or the ability of the West to determine what's going to happen after the end of this war, as we see it right now, until today, after close to 50 days of war," Marouf told Sputnik.

For her part, Ghadi Francis insists that extermination of the Palestinians can't stop the perpetual cycle of violence, because new generations would remember the war and seek vengeance. "I think what Israel knows and what [US Pentagon chief] Lloyd Austin yesterday tried to tell them about the strategic war here is that there is no way they can kill everyone."

British and German media have suggested that the West is seeking to force Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into peace talks with Russia, given that Kiev's counteroffensive attempt failed, having also depleted NATO weapon depots.

"Over the last couple of weeks, we've seen more and more stories, more independent evidence that Ukraine has just suffered massive losses, both killed and wounded, that are incapable of returning to the fight. So, I think this flood of information will keep pouring out," retired CIA intelligence officer Larry Johnson told Sputnik.

However, Western politicians should not delude themselves into believing that they would be able to fool Russia, as it remembers both the derailed Istanbul peace talks of March 2022 and sabotaged Minsk Agreements of 2015, per the CIA veteran.

Russia's cheap and versatile drones used in Ukrainian conflict zone: what are they?

Aside from the Lancet loitering munition that has been making headlines over the past several months, Russian drone manufacturers have designed a number of cheap and efficient drone models that prove to be quite a boon to the Russian forces engaged in the Ukrainian conflict.

The Oko design bureau in Russia has recently rolled out an upgraded version of their Privet-82 kamikaze drone that is currently being actively used by Russian forces operating in the Ukrainian conflict zone.

The new model, Privet-82M1 features a new improved control system that allows drone operators to guide the drone from the safety of a dugout or some other shelter, thus decreasing the likelihood of them becoming victims of an enemy retaliatory strike.

🇺🇸 The number of mass shootings in the United States this year has reached 38, the highest number since at least 2006, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday, citing data of its own online tracker.

The newspaper defines mass shootings as incidents of gun violence in which at least four people are killed, excluding the shooter. The tracker relies on mass killings information collected by the Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University that dates back to 2006.

Last Sunday, police in Texas and Washington received two reports of mass shootings less than 1.5 hours apart, marking the 37th and 38th such incident this year. The previous record was set in 2022 with 36 shootings, the report said.

Ex-Congresswoman Liz Cheney mulls over presidential run to counter Trump, according to reports

Former congresswoman Liz Cheney is contemplating running for US president in the 2024 election as a third-party candidate to not let Donald Trump return to the White House, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday.

Cheney vows to do “whatever it takes” to prevent Trump from winning the election and is warning that he can transform the US democracy into a dictatorship and try to stay longer than his term, the report said.

“Several years ago, I would not have contemplated a third-party run,” the report cited Cheney as saying in a Monday interview. “I happen to think democracy is at risk at home, obviously, as a result of Donald Trump’s continued grip on the Republican Party, and I think democracy is at risk internationally as well.”

🇺🇸 Just under half of 18-29-year-old Americans plan to "definitely vote" in the US presidential election next year, Axios reported, citing a Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics poll released Tuesday.

The 49% finding represents an eight-percentage-point drop from the 57% recorded in the fall of 2019 by the institute. Sharp declines were particularly seen among black and Hispanic young Americans, with decreases from 50% to 38% and 56% to 40%, respectively.

The figures dropped just two percentage points to 66% in terms of Democrats, while Republican respondents who definitely plan to vote dropped 10 percentage points to 56%.

With 29% of the hypothetical youth vote, Joe Biden led Donald Trump by four points, while 31% of respondents said they didn’t know which candidate they would vote for. Notably, 69% of those who said they would vote for Biden rather than Trump said their choice reflected opposition to Trump rather than support for Biden.
