🇩🇪📊 Germany’s level of dissatisfaction is the highest on record for Chancellor Scholz, a recent poll suggests

At least 74% of Germans disapproved of the job Scholz was doing, according to an opinion poll by YouGov. And a separate poll found 73% of Germans to be unhappy with their coalition government, making it the worst monthly figure for the government since it first came to power.

The poll also asked respondents what they would like their government to cut spending on: 64% or respondents said the federal budget should cut welfare payments, 54% said military aid for Ukraine should be cut, 41% said implementing climate measures in the economy should go, and 27% said planned child welfare should be cut.

The poll comes at a time when Germany’s economic woes are creating a string of disastrous events for the government, including having to freeze spending, and pulling an economy minister from a UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) due to the country’s budgetary crisis.

🇬🇧 In preparation of a difficult election year for his party, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is trying to use what he thinks is an ace up his sleeve. As the Labour party continues to surge ahead of the Conservative party, Sunak finds himself defending his new Rwanda asylum bill which he adopted from his predecessor.

Sunak first had objections to the bill in the spring of 2022, when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer. But he is now using the issue of immigration in an effort to rally the trust and support of voters, as well as his own party. However, the bill has already cost him his immigration minister, who quit the role because Sunak’s bill would not “end the merry-go-round of legal challenges”.

A vote is likely due for Tuesday, yet Sunak has said he will not treat the vote as a “confidence matter” - meaning he will not stand down or call an election if he loses. The bill will take just 29 Tory MPs to vote it down.

🇺🇸💰 US vetoes Gaza ceasefire, profits from arms sale on same day

The United States made $106.5 million from a transfer of munitions to Israel just hours after vetoing a ceasefire resolution at the United Nations.

The news was released in a “Friday news dump” at 11pm as Americans prepared to enjoy their weekend.

The US Senate had been attempting to draft regulations placing conditions on further arms transfers to prevent Israeli war crimes.

The Biden administration’s flagrant disregard of congressional process has led some to question their stated commitment to minimizing civilian casualties, including former State Department official Josh Paul.

Musk demanded that Zelensky explain the arrest of a US citizen

"An American citizen is in prison n Ukraine after we sent over a $100 billion? Is there more to this story than simply criticizing Zelensky? If that’s all it is, then we have serious problem here," Musk wrote in X.

This is how the billionaire reacted to the statement by journalist Tucker Carlson that since July, American video blogger Gonzalo Lira has been tortured in a Ukrainian prison for criticizing Zelensky, and Biden does nothing about it.

Will Zelensky's Argentina visit change minds of Global South?

Presence of the Ukraine President in Buenos Aires at the inauguration of Javier Milei's government is apparently seen by Kiev as a PR coup aimed at restoring the Ukrainian president's tarnished image as Western support for Ukraine wanes, according to Pagina 12, a left-leaning Argentine publication.

Zelensky's greatest hope is to make Milei a strategic ally in the conflict against Russia, which would accept Kiev's unrealistic "peace formula" during a Ukraine summit proposed by Milei, according to Daniel Kersffeld, Pagina 12 contributor. The scholar notes that Kiev also expects Buenos Aires to impose sanctions on Russia.

Zelensky's biggest bet is that the new Argentine government - with Washington's backing - will bring the governments of the region together and persuade them to support Zelensky and turn their backs on Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kersffeld added.
