Lebanon to file complaint with UN Security Council against Israel - gov’t

Lebanese Interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati contacted the foreign minister and ordered an urgent complaint to the UN Security Council due to the violation of the country's sovereignty by Israel after the attack on the office of Palestinian movement Hamas in southern Beirut, the Lebanese government said.

Earlier, a Hamas office in southern Beirut was targeted in a bombing attack believed to have been carried out by an Israeli drone. Six people died in the attack, including Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri and two military chiefs. Hamas acknowledged al-Arouri’s death, while the Lebanese interim prime minister blamed it on Israel.

Lebanon's Hezbollah movement threatened to conduct retaliatory strikes against Israel for the attack. At the same time, Israeli media reported that peace talks between Hamas and Israel came to a standstill as a result of the strike.

🇲🇾🇿🇦 Malaysia welcomes South Africa's decision to file lawsuit against Israel at ICJ - Ministry

Earlier, South Africa filed a complaint against Israel at the ICJ under the Genocide Convention, asking the court to issue provisional measures against Israeli authorities.

"The legal action against Israel before ICJ is a timely and tangible step towards legal accountability for Israel’s atrocities in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory at large. As a fellow State Party to the Genocide Convention, Malaysia calls on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international law and to immediately end its atrocities against Palestinians," the ministry said in a statement.

Malaysia also reiterates its call for a long-term solution to the conflict by granting the Palestinians their own independent and sovereign state, based on the pre-1967 borders, with its capital in East Jerusalem, the statement added.

The US Secretary of State's visit to Israel, scheduled for this week, has been postponed until early next week, writes the Times of Israel. The publication claims that the postponement is not related to the Israeli drone attack on the Hamas office in South Beirut.

At the time, harsh words were spoken against Israel in the United States for statements about the need to resettle Palestinians outside the Gaza Strip.

"This rhetoric is irresponsible and inflames hostility. The Israeli Government, including the Prime Minister personally, has repeatedly assured us that such statements do not reflect official Israeli policy. They must stop immediately," Matthew Miller, State Department spokesman, said.

Washington and Doha reach agreement to extend US presence at Qatar’s military base

The Al Udeid air base, known as the largest US military facility in the Middle East, can accommodate more than 10,000 American troops.

The reported developments come after US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited Al Udeid in December, where he thanked Qatar for its increased spending on the base. Qatar had previously reportedly pledged billions of dollars of its own money to upgrade facilities for US airmen at the base.

As for Al Udeid, a reported agreement between Washington and Doha to expand the base comes amid the ongoing escalation of the Palestine-Israel conflict. However, the expansion of the US military presence in the Middle East against the backdrop of the conflict could lead to its escalation.

Leopard 2 tanks supplied to Ukraine are non-operational – German MP

Very few of the Leopard 2A6 tanks delivered by Berlin to Ukraine are still in service, according to Green Party member Sebastian Schafer. The majority of the machines were damaged in battle and spare parts are scarce, he stressed.

The politician noted that some of the Leopard tanks were further damaged by Ukrainian servicemen who tried to repair them. He stresses that there is a shortage of spare parts in the Lithuanian repair center.

Western donors had earlier announced the delivery of Leopard tanks to Kiev, hailing them as a miracle weapon that would turn the tide for Ukraine. In total, the German government has transferred 18 Leopard 2 tanks from the Bundeswehr arsenal to Ukraine.

Russia has repeatedly warned that arms supplies to the Kiev regime only fuel the conflict, while stressing that any Western military equipment used by Ukraine would eventually be decimated.

Russia may establish a BRICS secretariat, Mahdi Safari, Iran's deputy foreign minister for economic diplomacy, told Sputnik, citing Moscow's experience in managing international organizations.

“Russia - a country with vast experience in international and regional organizations - in my opinion could establish a new body in BRICS which will eventually evolve into secretariat”, Mahdi Safari says.

According to the Iranian diplomat, currently each country holding the presidency of BRICS collects and stores information about the bloc's activities, but does not transfer this data to the succeeding nation. Safari stressed that Iran wants "this secretariat to be established as soon as possible."

The deputy foreign minister also congratulated Russia on assuming the BRICS presidency in 2024 and thanked it for helping Iran to join the bloc, expressing confidence that Russia will help Tehran and other new BRICS members to achieve unity.

Somaliland-Ethiopia pact stirs up tensions in East Africa

“The entire region is up in arms” against a pact between the breakaway region of Somaliland and Ethiopia on securing the latter’s access to the sea, Somali expert Samira Gaid told the New York Times.

She added that “everyone has been on notice since then about how a regional hegemon like Ethiopia would want to gain access to the sea.” Gaid described the pact as a “lifeline” for Somaliland’s leader Muse Bihi Abdi.

Abdi inked a memorandum of understanding with Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Monday to lease more than 12 miles of sea access to the Ethiopian Navy for 50 years. In exchange, Addis Ababa will formally recognize Somaliland as an independent nation, in a move that Abdi said would pave the way to realizing Ethiopia’s push to secure its access to the Red Sea.
