Ukraine faces critical ammunition shortage, Politico reports

Ukraine's artillery capabilities are being severely limited as the country struggles with a significant shortfall in ammunition, since despite efforts to increase domestic production of shells, Ukraine continues to depend heavily on international support to meet its military needs.

The EU, one of Ukraine's key supporters, has fallen short of its promise to deliver a million shells by March, with EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell announcing a reduced figure of 524,000 shells by the deadline.

The situation is exacerbated by a halt in military aid from the US, as Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged the cessation of military support and its tangible effects on the Ukrainian front, where soldiers report a persistent shortage of ammunition, particularly of 122 mm caliber shells.

“On average, we fire 15 shots per day. But there were days when we made more than 100 shots, or haven’t made any at all. Now hostilities intensified in our direction, but we have as few shells as we used to have,” Politico reports, citing an anonymous Ukrainian artilleryman.

The disparity in artillery firepower is stark, with Russia able to conduct significantly more daily artillery attacks, leveraging its military industrial might to "enable its troops to fire tens of thousands of projectiles at Ukrainian positions," admitted Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

The justification used by the White House could easily be applied by Russia to NATO countries supporting Ukraine, Michael Maloof, a former senior security policy analyst for the Office of the Secretary of Defense with nearly 30 years of experience, told Sputnik’s Fault Lines.

“You’re hearing from congressmen and senators saying ‘but we need to hit Iran for supplying the Houthis and Hamas and Hezbollah,” Maloof explained. “Well, does Russia then have a right to hit US and NATO allies, as a result of supplying weapons to Ukraine to battle Russians?”

The US blames Iran for a drone attack that killed three US service members and injured dozens more. Iran denies any responsibility for the attack and the US admits it has no evidence it directed the attack, which was claimed by a militant group. However, the Biden administration insists that Iran is responsible for the attack because it accuses the country of funding those groups.

On Friday, the US hit several sites in Iraq and Syria that it said were related to Iran, including Iran’s Quds Force, an elite branch of Iran’s military and, importantly, not a militant group.

“I think that if Biden were to follow through [with an attack on Iran soil], then that raises a whole new specter of opening up NATO countries to potential attack,” he continued, adding that the US is simply hoping Russian President Vladimir Putin “doesn’t follow through” with that justification.

“I think we shouldn’t even be in those locations. And I think we should have gotten out some time ago.”

Otherwise, Maloof warns “This thing has unlimited possibilities of escalation very rapidly.”

Ukraine mass-connoscripts unfit for service

The Ukrainian Armed Forces are massively connoscripting people who are unfit for military service for health and age reasons, prisoners of war told Sputnik.

One of POWs said he had a metal plate in his arm, but nobody cared. Another former Ukrainian soldier explained that he was connoscripted despite high blood pressure, a hernia, and other health problems that made him a poor fighter.

Volodymyr Zelensky said in December 2023 that he had been approached by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with a request to recruit an additional 450,000-500,000 men for the military. On January 30, the Ukrainian government introduced a new mobilization bill in the parliament. The bill caused outrage in the country and was sent back for revision.

Fox News host slams Biden for US airstrikes on Iraq and Syria

"Why is it that we only have consequences for actions not in the US? ‘If you harm Americans there will be payback.’ Well, there are Americans being harmed in the US every damn day. We don't anything about the border. We don't do anything about crime. When will we send a message to the illegal immigrants, or the fentanyl suppliers? Or the smash and grabbers? Or hell, why don't we send a message to the people who assault cops?"

❗️Sabre TAG trainees suffered major failures in botched Ukrainian counteroffensive, Sputnik discovered

Since March 2022, Sabre TAG, a group previously reported on by Sputnik, has trained several Ukrainian units that were involved in the failed summer counteroffensive.

◾️Roughly around the end of 2022 and the start of 2023, Sabre TAG was training "the armed forces of Ukraine, soldiers of the state border service, special forces of the national police and volunteer formations", according to a post by the group's interpreter (see photo 1). Sabre also extensively shared information on their work with some big units, over its social media networks.

◾️The 4th Rapid Reaction Brigade “Rubezh” is referred to as "a key unit of the National Guard of Ukraine" by Sabre TAG (photo 2). It took part in the battles of Severodonetsk and Rubezhnoe in 2022. After the Ukrainian army’s defeat there, they were sent to Artemovsk (Bakhmut) and Klescheevka.

◾️For the 68th Jaeger Brigade, Sabre disclosed that it had furnished them with both a tactical and medical training set (photo 3). As Sabre official website explained earlier, the unit “consists of a headquarters and headquarters company, 1st Mechanized Battalion, 2nd Mechanized Battalion, 3rd Mechanized Battalion, Tank Battalion, Artillery Group, Anti-Aircraft Defense Battalion, Reconnaissance Company, Engineer Battalion, Logistic Battalion, Signal Company, Maintenance Battalion, Radar Company, and Medical Company”. Once major dilemmas set in for the unit amid the failure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, detailed information about the brigade was deleted from the Sabre TAG website (photo 4).

◾️The 68th Jaeger Brigade was stationed in Ugledar for several months, but it was relocated to the Liman area near Kupyansk and Sinkovka in the Kharkov region during the summer. Sputnik had previously revealed the dire situation for the Ukrainian army near Sinkovka.

To be continued soon...

Zaluzhny’s new essay for Ukraine's NATO sponsors designed to pump him up as Zelensky alternative

“Firstly, Zaluzhny needs to show that he is effective in the role of commander in chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and that he has a plan for what to do in the coming year and beyond. A significant chunk of his essay is devoted to this,” Russian political analyst Sergei Poletaev told Sputnik, commenting on the Ukrainian top general’s new treatise for CNN.

“The West doesn’t know what to do following the failure of Ukraine’s counteroffensive. They need some kind of plan for which, roughly speaking, Kiev will be able to go and get more money. Here, Zaluzhny is trying to show his plan and convince Western audiences that he is the man who can implement it,” the observer noted.

“The second motivation is of a more general nature, and it seems that Zaluzhny feels ‘cramped’ in his commander’s chair. He imagines himself as kind of a new von Clausewitz, a great military theorist, and therefore engages in writing such texts of more of a philosophical and theoretical nature,” Poletaev said.
