Putin made the comment in response to journalist Tucker Carlson's concern that China would represent an unforgiving "colonial power" and exercise influence through the BRICS economic bloc.

Russia was willing to comply with the implementation of the Minsk agreements, President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with US journalist Tucker Carlson.

“The current Ukrainian leadership, foreign minister, all other officials and then president himself said that they don't like anything about the Minsk agreements,” Putin said in the interview, released on Thursday. “We addressed the United States and European countries’ leadership to stop these developments immediately, to implement the Minsk agreements. But frankly speaking, I didn't know how we were going to do this. But I was ready to implement them.”

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine was sparked by a CIA-backed coup in 2014, Putin said.

Russia would not have reacted if not for the “bloody developments” of the killing of civilians and law enforcement officers during the so-called Maidan Revolution, Putin said.
